Cooling Fan
 

Hi
Reading RAVE (as you do) in preparation for fitting a new cooling fan motor.
It states:

'26.25.06
Hold centre nut on cooling fan motor spindle and turn fan clockwise to release. Remove and discard fan.
CAUTION Fan assembly must be replaced if removed, do not fit original assembly.'

Fair enough, but I wondered what the reason was. Can anyone enlighten me?

I guess it had something to do with the fragile nature of the plastic clips and eventual warranty claims, plus Rover wouldn’t have supplied them at cost.

I’ve done about nine motor repairs and always reused the original fan blades.

Vitesse is correct, the fan motor gets pretty hot when it's in frequent use. This heat is transferred via the armature spindle to the fan mounting plate. The fan therefore gets pretty hot around the centre where the three bayonet clips are located. Eventually, the area becomes brittle, so it's not unusual to read about breakage of the clips. MGR were aware of this issue so advised that a replacement fan unit be fitted if the original one had to be removed in service/repair situations. Members who have had a broken clip have been advised to use a self-tapping screw through the fan boss to secure it to the plate.

I have always re-used the fan blades, and if i ever thought that the clip/tags were worn down to much then self tapper was inserted. ;)

Ian; it's down to your judgement. If the bayonet fitting feels tight, there should be no reason not to refit the original blades. Remember: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". :D
