Does a head gasket failure on a 1.8 mean it is terminal for the engine.

Nope, not at all. around 350 to £450 from what I read :)

no not at alll! we are currently doing the headgasket on a 1.8 k. if you are going to takle it yourself its faily easy to do. just mark everything before you take it apart.

get a good quality head gasket kit from dgmrs and get the head skimmed. the head on ours is currently at the machine shop getting skimmed (£30+vat).

If you don't feel like doing it theres a largenumber of good mechanics that are known well but the guys and girls in the groups.

Not terminal in the slightest (unless it has got seriously hot!)-however what is important is measuring the height of the cylinder liners (which should stand proud of the block and be of even heights) and the face of the cylinder head for any warp (a max of .002 of an inch from memory).

If the head is straight there is no need to get it skimmed-most head gasket jobs I’ve done have not needed the head skimming!

Not actually mine since I think it was scrapped, but the head gasket went. I had it done at considerable expense by Dales Rover but it failed a few hundred miles later. The wife still says it was her favourite car. Based on this thread, I'm wishing now I'd researched the garage to take it to more thoroughly. I part exchanged it for a Vauxhall astra turbo convertible which we still have and has been a very reliable car, but the Rover was a smoother ride.

Probably cheaper to fix than a cam belt service on a V6 :}

Banana has had 5 head gaskets replaced. First one by the 2nd owner. I have had a further 3 failures and the last head gasket was replaced as a cautionary measure as the radiator had split. That was in 2017.

Sorry to hear that Julien, get it fixed, there are a few mechanics who often travel around and can deal with it for a reasonable price.

Hi Fred. no it is not mine there is a Sea Frost with just 36k on the clock one owner from new, was thinking of taking a punt at it.
