re: staining oak wooden steering wheel?

hi all, hope you are keeping warm!! I have a lovely looking walnut wood dash in my tourer after replacing the good but plastic version. However, my steering wheel is light oak and just doesnt look right with a that lovely walnut. Given the rarity (and price) of walnut steering wheels, has anyone tried sanding down and staining one with walnut wood stain?? i am very tempted but love the feel of the present oak wheel and dont know if refurbing it would result in a similar finish or end with something that feels sticky and just not the same. Any thoughts?

It would be a disaster. :duh:
The way to go is, buy an original one or leave well alone.
Kev.

This is one I did a while ago,

I sanded all of the varnish off, what a job!

Well worth it.
