Am I Leaking ?
ROVER 75 PETROL 2LTR
Some months ago at my MOT i had to have the front brake pipes changed. This was carried out and no further problems. The other day as I sometimes do I popped the cover to check the brake and clutch fluid chamber. Before I had the brakes done I always remembered the oil level was always up to the MAX line. I looked and found the level much lower than this but dont know if the mechanic filled it up to a lower level which is normal or if its leaking!!! I park my car on a clean flat concrete surface and see no leaks. I would like to know the following: Where should I look for leaks under the car if any? Where should the fluid level always be at? If there is a leak can I drive the car ( i think I already know that answer !!!. Many thanks |
Almost certain the mechanic has bled the brakes as he should and that is why the fluid is at a different but still safe level.
I don't think it is anything to worry about, just note the new level and check it is maintained when you next check :) |
thanks Stocktake
What I I find that the level indeed is falling, can I drive the car if I always fill up, will the system still work till I can get it in to a garrage I have to drive to mums 80th on sat but if I cant get a garrage to look at it till then |
If the level is not reasonably constant then i would not drive the car and take it to a garage but before you head off to them I think all you have now is a new level to monitor and there is no problem, the level will fall everso slightly as the pads wear but this will be over many months and not noticable on a daily / weekly basis, any noticable drop in a short period of time indicates a fault.
Having said that I pretty certain it will be fine, just the mechanic doing his job :). |
Thanks
The central fluid resevoir is for the clutch and brake how do I identify which system is leaking |

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
it gets more confusing Ok so the resevoir I think is both clutch and brake fluid is NOT !!!!! So if i think I have a leak it will affect only the brakes I am suprised that HAYNES would get this so wrong thanks |
It certainly is confusing. The handbook says don't let it drop below the MIN mark (and don't drive the car if it is) but there isn't a MIN mark! Nor is there one shown in the diagram in the handbook.
Anyway, mine is half an inch below the MAX mark. I hope that's not below the MIN. |
