Gearbox knock

Oh dear...

2.0 diesel manual.

I managed to stall the car today while in 4th gear - I went to change down into 2nd but missed.

Everything seemed ok. Car restarted and drove back to my house. While I'm was waiting for the gates to open I heard the knock.

The sound is similar to my rattling lay shaft on my terrano.

The knock is intermittent and quite growly and loud but disappears when the clutch pressed. No problems selecting gears and no noises when driving. Really knocks when I turn the engine off but nothing on startup.

Anyone any suggestions as to what may have come loose?

Thanks

Dave

Check your bottom mount.

Alan, not that type of knock. This is from the gear box / clutch housing while stationary.

Hi Mike, good to see you haven't given up on me in exasperation!

How do you mean flywheel? Could you pad it out a bit for me so I can understand?

FrenchMike 6th June 2016 18:20

Being situated between engine and box ,could have suffered from an extra torque ?

To know more,Google for Luk flywheel ...

My clutch plate centre sheared. Could it be some sheared friction material. Fly wheel makes sense also.

Hmmmmmmm

I hope it isn't the fly wheel!

Well I guess the only way I'm going to find out is to have a look.

Mike, I'll be trying out your " how to " to get the transmission off. Is it imperative to drain the gearbox oil? I only ask as my drain plug has been completely mashed ( not by me! ) so won't undo. When I changed the oil I had to syringe it out. Just trying to avoid that.

Just catch most when the drive shaft comes out. Can you get a torch to see up the bottom of the bell housing? I've never looked personally but before you start the big job it would be worth a peek.

Ah, yes of course drive shafts:duh: I'll syringe first.

I had a look earlier but couldn't see anything. Really not looking forward to this little job...
