NS driveshaft removal/ replacement - circlip
I noticed that i had some gearbox oil leaking from the nearside seal when I was replacing the PAS return hose a couple of weeks ago.
I have ordered a new seal and some gearbox oil. Haynes states that the retaining circlip should be replaced when refitting. What is the consensus on this? Does anyone know the size or where I can get one if it is necessary? I could not see it on DMGRS unless it is the same as the one for the CV joint and for some reason I cannot get into the Rimmers site this morning. Just want to get all in place for when I get a chance to take it. Brian |
"Should" be replaced - meaning ideally but I've re-used the clips (in my location/customs etc) would have otherwise had to wait for 3 weeks, so if the clip is undamaged you "should" get away with it.
Regards ps. Rimmer's have been down for several days now |
Rimmers did have them, I'm not sure about them needing replacement.
When I fitted a new one I found it had spread quite a bit due to needing to be opened to get it on the shaft. I was concerned but it has been ok. macafee2 |

Just to clarify, I think we're talking about a "snap ring" like this aren't we? https://www.roughtrax4x4.com/media/c..._odm-1-min.jpg Haynes and RAVE are using the wrong term. I came across a snap ring when recently removing my outer CV joint from the driveshaft. I saw no reason to discard and replace this. It was in perfectly serviceable condition and keeping original parts is often the most sensible choice. So if your snap ring does the job Brian, let it continue to do so would be my advice. :D Simon |

If you do a quick general internet search you'll find both CIRCLIP and RING are very commonly used terms. Both are equally good references.----;);) |

Here is a good reference showing the difference between a circlip and a snap ring, in the UK at least. :} Simon |
No need to replace this part, i have changed quite a few clutches and the rings always refit ok and hold as good as they did.

They actually call their own snap ring a circlip.--:shrug::shrug: As I said. Both names seem to be used and appropriate.--- |
Thank you all for your comments.
Very heartening as I could not identify actual size required. Fingers crossed that it comes out without deforming so that I can reuse it. I am pretty sure that it was probably not changed when the clutch was replaced a while back. Brian |

I wondered about the need to change it but followed the Haynes manual as I was worried about not changing it macafee2 |
