Contisport Contact 3, 5 and 6's?
Another (1/2) change of tyres coming up for my R75V8 and note that the Contisport Contact 3's that the car has always had for the last 220k miles are getting difficult to find. If possible I'd like to buy 2 tyres for the fronts and use with the 5/6 mm Contact 3's still on the back, which adds an extra complication!
Contact 5's and 6's there are, so is that the best choice, or is it time for a total change maybe? I like the combination of grip, wear and comfort/road-noise on the Contact 3's, so would be looking for something like that. Any idea about the difference(s) between the Contact 3/5/6's? Just marketing maybe? Any advice appreciated. David |
Hello David
Have a look here - http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/ I have Goodyear AS2 on my V8 and I think they suit the car well. I previously had Pilot Super Sports which were great but not so good when the winter comes in. |
Thanks! In part answered my own question by going to the Conti site. Lots of info and reading there! Settled for ContisportContact 5 225/45 18 91Y FR based on that; form your own conclusion. We don't all have the same preferences on tyre behaviour, and 'performance' is a multi-facetted thing.

I have been very disappointed in the life of the Contisport contact 5's. I know these cars do eat rear tyres but the last set of rears are only 1mm off the wear indicators with 3500 miles on them. It seems to be these cars need an oil change and rear tyre at the same time.
The fronts will probably do closer to 12k miles but considering I don't drive like I stole it I am quite disappointed. I already have a set of Bridgestones on refurbished wheels and I am hoping these will last a bit longer, according to my tyre fitter he finds these last about 50% longer when fitted to a BMW. I did think about taking Michelin up on there advert http://news.michelin.co.uk/dekra-tes...0-miles-longer but my tyre fitter reckoned they would find a way out of that and they were nearly £30 a tyre more. |
Thanks Steve.
Maybe its because I drive like the old f**t the wife claims I am, but I manage over 20K on the fronts and only a tad less on the rears with the Contact3's, hence my inclination to stay with the marque now that the 3's are no longer available. I have always used Michelin Premacy's, latterly Premacy 3's, on my 3 V6's and been happy with them, performance and wear, but even on those relatively skimpy sizes the price ticket is getting a bit much. Guess the UK Michelin ad. will cut even less mustard over here in NL !! Still gathering info, but I guess I will try the Contact5's ??? David |
tyres
The conti 3 gave me 5-6k rear and about double that on front over 50k
My current Mich pilot super sport 7000 so far with 3.5 and 5 mm still left. |
When i first bought my car, had approx 5k from the rears, they were OE tyres contisport, i went strighht to have a 4 wheel alignment check on Hunter equipment found the rears were some 3deg out, since then i get 8k from the rears, i also used to get the hopping syndrome when turning on full lock from the front wheels, changed to different make tyre and no such problems. i now run on Hankook tyres and like them very much.

I'd never go near Conti again.
Hankook Ventus Evo 2's all the way for me now. Make the car feel far better. 220k miles on a v8? |

Trouble with tyres is it's all very subjective.
I would however be tempted to say there will be very little difference between any of the contis, as the 5's were supposed to be just simply an updated version of the 3 and of course the 6 should be an updated version of the 5 Personally I've had conti 5's on a Passat cc and they were OK, but when I swapped to Goodyear eagle f1's they were noticeably better. I also used them on a much more powerful Audi and they were better than the contis they replaced. If I were to fit decent tyres on any of my cars I'd go for them again. |
