Simple Door Mirror Repair

Following my earlier thread http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...highlight=2:30

I have now completed a mirror repair costing less than £1.00

This is how it started

http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...0b4319a988.jpg

So I bought these

http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...0b4317d4c4.jpg

There is a metal shank (tube like) which acts as the joint of the mirror & it is inevitably this that snaps when kicked etc... However running through this is the cables for the motor & heating elements and it is through this I used a M6 x 70MM bolt, washers & nut. The top washer diameter is 30MM & the bottom washer is 38MM

Firstly I tidied up the damage on the underside of the mirror itself so that it would sit flat on the door mounting (the break was not clean!) & then cut away the washer so allow the cables to pass through. I did however use a smaller grip washer beneath the head of the bolt which was not cut

see here

Next I removed the underside cover of the door mounting and inserted a large washer (tight fit but that was needed), this is what the bolt will tighten up too again also using a grip washer between the larger washer & nut.

I then tightened the bolt relatively tight but leaving enough play so the mirror can still be folded in

Next popped back on the chrome backing

The mirror is held very firmly & in full working order. This is a front view after bolting complete

So in total the repair to the housing was less than £1.00 and took about an hour of my time. Yes I still have to get replacement glass (I could get this from work as I work for a glass company but it wouldn't be heated) so I've order off good old eBay for £9.75.

I did call my local Rover dealer they wanted £245 for complete mirror supply only - Hmmmm say no more. Breakers yards wanted £50 and that was for the bullet style. So thanks to them put my brain in gear for a work around.

OK not perfect but it works, cosmetically looks exactly the same & best of all hardly any cost.

Hope this helps anyone else who faces mindless vandalism.

Sorry some of the pics a bit naf, used my mobile phone & the sun was very bright today.
