Spring protectors.

A few days ago I bumped in to a chap in a supermarket car park with an 06 reg 75 Cdti Connie SE saloon, during our chat he mentioned that his N/S spring fractured a short while ago with only around 30k on the clock. Now forgive me if I am wrong but I am led to believe that the later post 2004 cars were fitted with tyre protectors and this was after the MG/Rover bulletin, alerting to the problem was issued.

So one can imagine to my horror after checking my own car, that I too do not have tyre protectors fitted!! , so I have hastily ordered a set from Rimmers to fit at the weekend, and to think I carry my wife and kids around, and went all the way to POL and back at motorway speeds.

Don't think any cars left factory with tyre protectors fitted, was subject of recall and a bit hit 'n miss if done or not/or during a service = as an aside, your car has driven for 10 years+ without them and no reports of a spring failure at m/way speeds, most go as car being moved slowly / when weather cold from posts here and the other (dark side) .org forum

The spring protectors were only fitted by MGR using recall. Here's the info:

Recall: http://www.mediafire.com/view/3maguj...structions.pdf

The usual advice is to ignore the VIN notice and fit to all 75/ZTs as a precaution.

My Rover 75 has them, and there is no notification in any of the garage bills anywhere...
How did my car ended up having them?

When a garage carries out a 'recall' the service (labour and parts) is free and therefore no invoice is generated.

DSA (driving tests) always insist when a safety related recall is carried out on a tuition car that documentary proof is available to the examiner at time of a test, usual method is to insist the service book is stamped with details, or that a separate document is provided showing remedial work carried out.

Just checked the book from the car, and all the service things have been done and checked. But it doesn't say anything about a recall of tyre protectors... Mine is from 2000.

Sorry not meant to mislead, it is always a battle with recalls on driving school cars to have garage agree to stamp book or supply documentary evidence of work, where a car is presented for test as in on a known list of recalls, the examiner will reuse the test until proof is shown.

Where no such reason arises (as with most other vehicles) the customer would be happy work was done and not need or request evidence, perhaps Taxi's may present with similar problems but I have no knowledge of that.
