im looking at buying a freelander 2.0 diesel,
is there anything I should look out for??

PCV filter (ask if it was ever changed)
Check the clutch doesnt slip (anything over 100k miles and on original clutch, WILL need changing at some point)
airflow sensor (no low down power)
Hand brake (sometimes sticks on, sometimes wont engage at all)
intercooler pipes x 2 (go soft, porus and swell under boost)
Pipe to turbo (split = no power)
tyres (check tread and for cracks cos they are expensive)
electric windows (check they ALL work)
Make sure you get to start it cold, get it to running temp then switch it off and on a few times whilst its hot.
Check aircon works (if fitted)

Mate has a 2001 diesel freelander with 160k miles and bar a few teething issues which we've sorted it now runs lovely.

See if you can get a 2nd hand synergy as the ones for 75's/ZT's fit and they improve power and economy loads.

thanks for all the info, the one im looking at is a 55plate, with 69,000 miles on it full sevice history I belive its got same engine in as 75 diesel, its the adventurer

Also check that the VCU has not seized up. Do some gently reversing whit the steering at full lock. If it feels like the car is braking, the VCU is seized and needs to be replaced (costly) They seem to last 80000-100000 miles.

I thought they all did that Beinet?

Fuel pumps go on the Mk 1s just like on the CDTs - had to replace both in my daughter's Freelander. You can't run with a duff ITP either, unless you bypass the outlet pipe from the ITP and cable tie it to the base of the tank module. ;)

Any whining or strange noises from the transmission then walk away - although a tyre mismatch can cause whine. Knocking from the rear can be one or more of the rear differential mounts.

The biggest problem we have had so far was the OSF rear subframe body mounting failing. The captive mounting nut is inside one of the box sections and I had to cut through the rear floor to get to it to weld it up. Only symptom was a creaking noise on drive take up and braking. She does tow with it though - it is a working farm vehicle.


The M47R diesel engine has been a peach though - haven't touched it. :D

Yes. You should look out for a Japanese 4x4.

LandRover have the worst reliability record on the planet. And over the years I have had most of them. Every one developed major faults. And I mean MAJOR.

SWIMBO has just gone out in or 1998 Rav4. Utterly reliable. Drives like a car. Great off road. And I know I wont get a phone call from her to say she has broken down.

Costly to tax too., As Jonathan has said not very reliable,I have not had one myself,but my bro in law works on them,and even he says they are rubbish,along with Range Rovers.

Last month, our pub land lord (ex land rover salesman) was telling me a tail of selling a new £70k Range Rover that didnt even make it 20 miles before shutting down. They had to crane it onto a low loader. Back at the dealers the cars computer completely ****** up through diagnostics computer. It took them months to get it right.

Not good.
