Auto gearbox - oil ? & "usual" fan issue

Hi

Sorry to post often in my first few days .... but as a newbie I have lots n lots of questions - built up over my first few months of owning a 75 - many I am sure you more experienced guys have answered time and again

such as - what's the difference between the two references to diesel engines - cdt and cdti ? or are they the same ?

Armed with my haynes I am changing the auto gearbox fluid next week.

The haynes says use Texaco N402 - my local motor factor is a comma agent and they don't make an alternative and couldn't offer me one.

I am off to the (ex)main dealers next week to buy the x3 washers for the drain plug- level hole - and filler plug and I will ask them what they use then - but in the meantime...

Any recommendations for auto transmission fluid from you chaps ?

I am taking the plunge soon and getting a new motor for the cooling fan - the haynes removal proceedure seems to say take the motor out by removing the radiator - I understood that the front bumper has to come off - anyone here been there - done that ?

pps I have a diesel 75 2001 conn se

Thanks again

matt

Can't help on the auto-box oil but I can tell you the difference between CDT and CDTi

There is none.

Well, nothing physically different between the two engines anyhow. The only difference is the ECU engine map. The CDTi map gives more horse power output than the standard map. It is possible to get an upgraded map from an ex-Rover/MG garage but expect to pay high costs for the privellage. I believe you can get a similar result using aftermarked remaps.

As an alternative to the ECU map, have you got/going to get a RonBox (Rover Ron's tuning box and MAF sensor upgrade for CDT/i engines - allows you to fine tune your engine between economy and performance)

Removing front bumper is a fun thing to do. (note: read fun as 'tricky and long' ) Check out this thread for details on this http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...read.php?t=204

If you have any trouble getting the correct fluid from a dealer then go to Land Rover dealer as the same JATCO box is used in the Freelander, they will be able to supply N402 or an equivalent fluid.
Best not to use anything else.

Think GG means LR have diff. part No.
Rover is : VYK00040 (about £21/5litre +vat. This is enough for change)
L/Rover ; LNR402

In spite of what even auto specialists say, there is no exact equivalent to N402. (Ashcroft told me to use a Castrol fluid. WRONG. Castrol themselves told me they have no suitable fluid for the Jatco box)
Stick ridgidly to the change proceedure. Cant drain total content of box, you should get about 4.5 litres out/refill. Stick ridgidly to the change proceedure.Draining when hot and running up to operating temp after refilling before finally checking fluid level and topping up.
Only had a glance through Haynes but thought I saw fan removal with radiator. Have not heard this from the many members who have replaced motor, it's always been bumper off.
Could other members comment please
