How to remove key from fob?
Hello there. I don't know how you are supposed to remove the key from it's fob.
I damaged it and bought a new one - all is good but can't undo the key from the old fob. The grooves are too thin to get a screwdriver in if that is what you are supposed to do, so I thought I'd ask the MG club for some advice. I attached photos including a shot of the new fob where the key is supposed to fit in. https://previews.dropbox.com/p/thumb...36&size_mode=3 https://previews.dropbox.com/p/thumb...36&size_mode=3https://previews.dropbox.com/p/thumb...36&size_mode=3 |
Can't see the photos but have done a few of these fobs, most of the time I've just put the blade in a vice and wiggled & pulled the fob and the key, tab & roll pin have separated.
On the odd occasion where I suspect glue has been used I've hacksawed the old keyfob where it meets the harder plastic tab and done it that way. You're not going to reuse the old one anyway. Regards |
Same here, used a hacksaw twice to remove old key from fob.

Removing the key blade easy...make a kettle of boiling hot water,open the key case in half with a small flat screwdriver then remove black transponder chip and remote circuit board, leaving a bare key with just one half of the case on it....MAKE SURE ITS BARE !!! then pop the bare key into a mug of hot water..use the rest for a nice cup of coffee, leave it in the mug for 5 mins to soften up the plastic the wiggle it free happy days:}

Thanks for all the answers - I used a combination of boiling water and hacksaw as well as a hammer to knock in the key using the kitchen sink to prop against.
Unfortunately the key doesn't turn the engine over (fob is paired so electrics are ok). Every locksmith here (Bognor Regis) doesn't want to cut a duplicate key from my one which does work. Enclosed a picture of both, bad one is on the left side - maybe the edge has been hammered down a tiny bit, what do you think? :duh:https://scontent-lht6-1.xx.fbcdn.net...36&oe=5C2BCD6E Question is: should any decent locksmith be able to cut a copy of my good key from a blank?? |

It is mounted in the key back that you prise off to access the remote board, and looks like this....... https://www.usbid.com/assets/partpho.../PCF7930AS.jpg |

The cuttings of the key look different. They don't match.:shrug:

Yes sorry. I had the back side of one and the front side of other key - not very useful picture I see now. Well spotted! |
