So... Unit placed? I am curious as to your first impressions:D Does it do what you expected it to do?

Show us some pictures of the result. I know I would like to see that ;)

I'm afraid I chickened out of letting the local mechanic fit my stereo - he's never done one before, so I thought I'd leave it for Chris at Tayport to do on Thursday...but that's unfortunately been postponed for a week further.

I'll have a search for some other local solution, though I will happily drive 50 miles or so to get it done properly at a respectable cost. Any suggestions?

Sjonnie 10th April 2019 16:54

I would happily install the unit for you but I am afraid your drive would be more than 50 miles. More like 650 miles to be exact

I don't know of any good ICE specialist in your neighborhood but I am sure another forum member will.

Anyway... I will keep following this thread. I am truly interested in your first endeavors with this cheap unit :)

Split or Bust 10th April 2019 17:51

On the look out for a cheaper unit for Willy for the Split trip. Appreciate it's not been installed yet but would be good to have your inital thoughts on the unit such as what you think of the build quality, was the ebay description & pics accurate etc Maybe add a photo or 2 as well.

Will be watching this thread with interest, thanks :}

In the end, being a poor pensioner, I went for a cheap option -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Android-8...72.m2749.l2649

Even though I surely know generally you get what you pay for...I still bought it!

I'll let you know how it turns out...

That seems a really good price for an android head unit and the specs don't look too bad, only 1GB RAM could make it a bit slow in some situations but probably OK.

Usually for that kind of price you can only find the pretty useless WinCE versions.

I look forward to hearing you thoughts on it once you get it fitted as I may get one myself.

Would like it if you could let me know if there is a manufacturer and model number printed on the unit so I can check for updated or custom ROMs too, if you can.

All I can say at this stage is the unit arrived as described, and seems to have an abundance of connectors included. I will try to take a photo tomorrow. I have no idea as yet as to how it will perform, we will have to wait until it is installed, hopefully next Thursday.

I'm hoping the installation will be relatively straightforward, using the existing connectors off my radio. Does anyone know off-hand what the Harmon Kardon speaker impedance is? I am no expert on car audio, I just hope that the unit output is compatible with the car's amplifier  In fact, I'm not even sure where the amp is located - I think it might be under the driver's seat?:D

My experience so far is that most retailers of similar units will not install your own unit, only those they have sold themselves  I suppose that is understandable, but worth bearing in mind if you want to buy your own unit on eBay...so just as well there are many expert 'how to' threads on the forum to help all DIY enthusiasts. But I'm still going to let someone more expert than me do the installation, as I am not confident enough to risk messing up my facia!

I had no luck using the image gallery - it kept telling me my .jpg files were not images, so would not load. I've attached these links to a photo hosting site if anyone wants to view the unit:

https://ibb.co/P4qyFm4
https://ibb.co/jW7q841

The unit arrived well packed, and has a night vision waterproof camera as well. There were no discernible names or product numbers on the unit anywhere in sight. The kit comes complete with a gps aerial and metal fixing plate, and connectors as seen.

Is there any way to increase the RAM on these units, or are they only designed for what they have installed? As you note, 1Gb is not a lot, but if it is fast, it might prove adequate...we shall see!

Not sure if this is the exact same model - but looks similar.

Hello Slaya!

Looks to be the exact same unit. I was worried a bit about only 1Gb of RAM, but it runs on Android 8.1 GO, and as you can see in the two U-tube videos he has posted, it is plenty fast enough. Can't wait to get it installed, with the Rover logo screen of course! :)

The reviewer compared it favourably to his wife's Xtron unit, so there you go! I hope my reversing camera gets fitted the right way up!

Slaya 11th April 2019 20:37

Hope the installation goes ok :} will be interesting to see the final installation.

Does the unit have a USB port? Or a micro SD card slot?
