Back into 75 Ownership!

I had a Rover 75 CDTi a few years back when I lived in Scotland, 2 minutes down the road from Astraeus in fact, which proved rather handy! I sold that car for exactly what I bought it for when I no longer needed it to commute.

Now a few years later I find myself back down in England with a job that requires driving down (okay sitting in traffic on) the A14 fairly regularly. Of course I've decided I should do this in style in a 75. As such I will take delivery of a 2002 Rover 75 Connossieur 1.8 Auto on Friday that I'm pretty much buying sight unseen but very cheap. I has an MOT until July 2020 but it has been sitting for around six months being used very little.

While I was tempted by a V6 I'm gambling that I'll get on better with the relative simplicity and better milage of the 1.8. Cheaper to fix barring sourcing replacement heads, I hope.

Now given the car has a little over 90k miles on it I'm going to assume it has likely had the HG "done" at some point in its lifetime but the seller is not sure. I've been reading up on the issue on this very forum - are the PRT, uprated oil rails and head bolts easily identifiable without stripping the engine down (much)? I'd like to be able to identify what exactly I'm dealing with in terms of risk pretty quickly.

Other than that inevitable concern I look forward to an exceptionally comfortable and relaxed daily drive.

As it's a 2002 car it's doubtful it will have a PRT. Look at the bottom of the radiator, if it has a pipe with a plastic housing, that's a PRT, if not, the normal stat. :cool:

Don’t worry about it, keep an eye on the water and enjoy the car, if it goes.. fix it with a suitable gasket.

Having seen a Rover 75 for the first time in a parking lot in Cape town, first car I bought on arriving in UK was a 1.8 1999 wedgwood blue, then v6 Dark blue, replaced by p38 Range rover for 7 yrs, now back to my 3rd 75.
Best car ever. So glad to have one again.

I too have recently come back to the fold.

I recent search has turned up an "MG Rover specialist" not too far from here - C.A.T. Cars in Wisbech. I don't suppose anyone has any previous experience with them?

Well then. It drives quite nicely!

The paintwork has some pretty rough spots. I think I'll take my machine polisher to this one fairly soon and see how it comes up.

• A tiny amount of gunk on the water filler cap.
• Nothing on the oil filler cap.
• Smells a little smokey to me, but let's see how it is after a few miles as it has been sitting for six months.
• Oil looks black, will change as soon as a service kit arrives from dmgrs, along with filters etc.
• Needs a new drivers door seal.
• Boot shows signs of leaking before but not currently sodden.
• Hasn't had PRT thermostat conversion.
• A light buzzing somewhere around 2000rpm.
