Sorry......what? Am I missing something here. Why would you put 2 stroke oil in a modern Diesel engine?

Is there a genuine benefit or is this an old wives type of tale?

You are not missing anything, there is no benefit whatsoever in adding 2T oil to diesel for the M47R, in fact I would recommend not doing it at all ;)

It is supposed to help with lubrication of the injector pump and the injectors, some even say it helps with the burn in the combustion chamber, people have used it in diesels as the sulphur content has been reduced in the fuel and this helped lubricate parts of the fuel system, that's how I understand it, and I always did use it in my older Volvo V70 diesel and citroen xantia with no adverse effects but they were older designed engines. Oh and I used 3mll per litre of fuel.

‘The results of the study support a view that the practice of dosing diesel with 2-stroke oil is surprisingly ineffective in terms of lubricity and cetane improvements. Engine performance, fuel consumption and emissions were also unchanged; however the use of 2-stroke oil in diesel is potentially harmful to modern diesel injection equipment. Trace amounts of zinc, an element which is found in most 2-stroke oils, are well known to cause injector nozzle fouling and the study measured high levels of injector fouling when the test engine was running on diesel dosed with 2-stroke oil. While the oil industry may not mind the additional revenue from the sale of 2-stroke oil with each tank of diesel, this study demonstrated that it is not in the best interest of the user to do so.’

The above is a lift from the report linked to above.

So, instead of being beneficial it’s actually harmful for a modern diesel. Who’d have thought it?.....

Guess that’s why so few people would consider that adding two stroke to a modern diesel as being a good idea.

You pays your money you makes your choice.

I cant recall when, it would be a few years ago the topic was debated on the forum and I seem to recall the thinking was more positive. I also seem to recall reference to VW.

Ian, I can always tell when an owner is dosing up their diesel with 2SO......the injector compensation figures are through the roof and very unstable at that ;)

If you want a good case study, Mike Noc uses nothing but the cheapest diesel in Big Ron, and this has been from the car being delivered new.

At almost 400,000 miles, this car has one of the best set of injector balancing figures I've seen :drool4:

The top and bottom of the matter, it does nothing, and can in fact be detrimental to the way the car runs, and cause long term problems.

found the link and discussion

also found another thread about it on the forum

now I'm in the situation, what I thought from a previous thread was a good idea to now unsure if to continue.
As I cant recall the measurement it is not something I always do
now I wish I had not asked :)
