How fast is a Rover/MG 260 go?
|
As that appears to be a residential area, would it not have a 30mph speed limit?
|
The limiter is set to 155mph.
|
Wow that’s clever in a built up area but to answer your question I know one went around a racetrack with the limiter temporarily removed and it hit 178 mph. It was a supercharged one
|
Nope, would not want you regretting asking the question. ;)
If you are thinking of buying its more the sound and torque. Heavy old bus so may struggle with more modern cars. Some sound bites below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzsZLoIfb3Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USJrmrIIwdI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AegYGJIpo8 |
Porsche's are boring.
Though l like the 928 & the Panamera. |

Here you are Jason, in the link above is a 5 star review of your motor from Honest John. Be happy with that, you have nothing to prove to anyone :D |

My Bond 875 in which I'd put a semi race cam, up rated oil pump and ridiculous rear wheels wouldn't be far behind........................although it looked like a dodgem car.
Only thing was that at 75-80mph it wanted to flip over even with the front mounted petrol tank full and half a bag of soft sand in the front as well. FBR 666D was torched by numpties in it's lock up! |
For the camera. If you see the next video you can see it can be quite without the grunt, until I backed it up to the camera ;)
Thanks for your input into the rating Phil. The braking system is just has to been felt with the drilled out disks and massive calipers ;) |

I remember a chap had an Arial Square Four with a sidecar on at the G.E.C. at Witton in B’nam in the 50s. We all used to queue up at the bottom of Wyrley road , and the copper used to call him to the front of the queue(think he had a passion for one) and when he called us all on, the Square Four used to pull away with the sidecar almost going sideways up the road, leaving a black mark from the sidecar tyre. And the noise, fantastic. Those were the days of the Black Shadow?

The V8s have their faults, many owners get all hot and bothered when Brian points them out, personally I don't give a toss, what Brian says is right, it is underdeveloped!
It is a lazy lump of an engine that will potter around all day but is also capable of leaving a few hundred miles of tread on the road when you have a daft turn. Cabin heaters can have a mind of their own, watch the rear subframes for corrosion, water hose from inlet manifold to cabin heater is prone to going pop (uprated hose available from 260 OC), where the hose attaches to the plastic inlet manifold can crumble. Engine parts, best source is Rock Auto in the States. Because of the cobbled together electrics they can be "funny" with a T4, there's a "Gateway" ECU to allow the Ford engine to speak to the MGR systems! 28 mpg (not much less than a V6) is perfectly obtainable on a long run. They're just an impractical fun car, I love mine. |
Thanks for all your replies :}
Bored of the Boxster S now. After reading this thread back I would still like a V8. Better start looking ;) |

There was a while when I desperately wanted a 260 tourer and was prepared to let the current yellow tourer go to make way for one. Talking to a few owners I decided not to bother due to the idiosyncrasies of the model. Hand brake shoes, shocker prices and other little items specific to the V8. Working in the trade the last thing I want after an 8 hour day is fighting with a car that’s off the road with parts hard to find. Maybe one day though, as it’s been many years since I’ve driven one and it was only a short journey. The Boxster S is a car I’d love to own and probably never will as I just don’t know enough about them, I’m guessing if they go wrong in a big way it will ruin your life. A friend has a 966 carrera, that years equivalent to the 911 and his independant service and repair bills are eye wateringly expensive.

Yes those 996's are deep pocket cars, a workmate had one after an inheritance. He bought it from a Porsche dealer and within a 3 or 4 months it needed some major work but was luckily it was covered under there all encompassing warranty that comes when you buy a car from a main dealer.
12 months later and the engine management light came on and another trip to the dealer diagnosed a failing oil pump. The quote to repair this was in excess of £12k. The car was collected and he sold it to a specialist for a huge loss on his initial purchase price. In the 18 months of ownership he had a couple of services that cost in excess of £600 each, new front brakes and two sets of tyres at over £1200 a set. With the depreciation and running costs he reckons it cost him over £20k to do 15,000 miles. He now drives a Merc AMG. |
Very glad my street doesn't have a moron like you, so our children can play out happily and safely. I'd be glad to take you on in my TVR Tuscan 2S or my MG ZT Supercharged 4.6 V8. On a racetrack though.
