Northern Lights.

Hi, I found myself in Finland last week and decided to go and see if I could see the Northern Lights.

It was quite cloudy but after driving for some time, we came to a clear patch of sky.

These photos were taken in a roadside layby and it was about -25c, so it was very difficult to operate the camera!
In an ideal world it would have been warmer and I would have had my wide angle lens with me....

I cannot even begin to describe how painful it was taking these photos!
It was so cold my hands cracked and started bleeding!

I hope you enjoy. :)

During this one, a lorry went past...

It was a great thing to see. Hopefully I will get to see them again at some point in the future and maybe be better prepared for it!

Lovely display.

off in a few weeks to hopefully see them.
Are they better in a photo then the naked eye? I was told they were.

It makes you think, with what is going on up there, what a miracle our planet is. ;)

Lovely shots there Phil.

I have only ever been to Scandinavia, on business, in the summer.
That is when you roll out of a nightclub, late at night, and it is light. :D

Excellent! Where are you going?

They are clearly visible with the naked eye and are quite thin, they snake about.
The reason they are so visible in the photographs is because I used a slow shutter speed and a tripod.
This let's more light into the camera.
But, with the slow shutter the movement of the lights blurs and makes them appear wider.

If I used a fast shutter and high ISO the images would be very grainy.
The equipment I'm using isn't the best and I'm sure higher end equipment would get better results.

It was so cold I didn't really get the chance to play around.

Thank you! I was there on business as well.
The pubs don't seem to wake up until midnight for some odd reason.
