Alternator issue ?

Today my 2004 diesel rover 75 started flashing “charging fault” on the message screen.
Disappears when reving the engine, comes back at idle.
Has 12 volts across the battery terminals.
Seems the ternator is the culprit ?
Im wondering if my 2004 facelift car is a 3 pin or 2 pin alternator as i want to get a bush and regulator kit from dmgr.
Ive got a secondhand one coming from east which ill fit , but want to re furb the old one out of the car as a spare.

You may well find that what you need to refurb are the slip rings. I replaced my regulator and brushes in situ and got nowhere. When I got the alternator off the car I discovered that there were deep groves in the slip rings that were causing the fluctuating voltage. I've got it lying around somewhere so I'll see if I can find it and post a picture.

Ive got a tested second hand one coming from a breaker but would have preferred a new one but over here they dont seem to exist.
I wonder if its the same alternator thats on the landrover td4 ?
Not sure if i should order the kit from dmgr and refurb the bushes and diode pack
on the second hand one or just get it put in and see how long it lasts.
Appears a bit of a pig of a job to do!!!
Guess i could pull the old one apart, if the slip rings are ok , refurb that one!!
Still none the wiser as to if its a 3 pin or 2 pin alternator.
Seems later diesel cars might have had the 2 pin version but not sure!!

After a bit of digging found the following info re diesel alternators.
Appears no matter if the alternator is a 3 pin or a 2 pin, all diesels only use 2 of the pins.
Appears some listings for Landrover td4 alternators also list Rover 75 as well.
These appear to be100 amp units.

The car only uses 2 pins, but the alternators are physically different if they're a 2 or 3 pin version. :)

Might be worth changing the brush pack while it's off - new brushes should extend the lifetime a fair bit.

I intend to buy the regulator brush kit from you guys but still not sure which one my 2004 diesel takes as ive not taken the alternator out yet.

Anyone confirm the if the alternator for a rover 75 diesel is the same as in the landrover freelander td4.
If so we do have these over here!!

Ill wait for the second hand one to arrive, check out that one and buy the correct brush regulator pack before fitting it.
I degreased, washed the one in the car.
The charging fault symbol has stopped flashing on and off now but ive now just got a small battery light on constantly on the dash so assume the alternatori is fully gone ?
Suppose its done 187,000 km so cant realy complain.
I guess its going to depend on how good the slip rings are in both units.
Over here new replacements are $700 aud (if you can find any)but landrover ones appear alot cheaper, hence my question if the td4 ones fit!!
Seen a few out of germany mentioning both Rover 75/ landrover freelander td4
on their description.
I suspect given my car is a 2004 facelift it may be a 2 pin unit but as the weather has been bad havnt had a look. Not much room to see anything with oil pump so close

See if you can source any of the alternatives in Oz from the list accompanying this R 75 alternator, which is the correct one for you car not oem
Double check with your supplier obviously.
