Bolts to chassis holding backlight on tourer off..HOW!!
 

Im struggeling to get the bolts that holds the backlight on my tourer as I`ve got a new backlight and a bizzylizzy kit but there is now way to get the damn bolts that are there out...Just spinning and cant get hold of them In the back to keep them spinnig...

Ant clever heads out there know what Im talking about and maybe have an idea how I can get these out?:bowdown:

There was a thread on here recently discussing some of the ways of doing this, but I can't find it again for the moment. I fitted the Bizzy Lizzy kit a few years ago and it has been good. I tried all sorts at the time to stop the stud from rotating, but the only one that worked for me, was to remove the rear side panel on the Tourer and use a long fine nosed set of pliers through one of the small holes to hold it.

I hope someone comes along with a easier option, but this one was the only one that worked for me.

You could try a good sharp centre punch north, south, east & west, round the edge of the of the rotating fixing point, which may stop it from turning enough to remove the bolt.

You could also try drilling two small 2ml pilot holes and the add a couple of panel pins through the holes to stop it form turning highlighted by the green dots in the photo below, blue dots indicate NSEW points.

Arctic (who else?) recommends punching small dimples north, south, east and . . . west on the rivet you can see as it may grip sufficiently for you to undo those pesky bolts. I had the same problem recently but failed to get them out without distorting the hole. I've had to use rubber rivnuts (see eBay) to provide a safe replacement. Good luck.

Those have been tried several times at our Nano meets and failed miserably, as they could not be tightened up enough, if you can they seem to pull through so air on the caution side.

cheers Arctic. I make some inserts out of I think Nylon or some sort of "plastic" rod. They were tight fitting with some Super Glue added :). I then used the fix that... was it you suggested, to add some metal brackets to the broken "lugs" on the tail light cluster. I also drilled and bolted the bracket in place as well as super glued it. I then used a self tapping screw thru the metal and into the "Nylon" insert.

When I removed the cluster and saw the butchers hole in the chassis, I was at a loss on how on earth I was going to over come it.

Drill through the flange with a 1,5mm drill bit, place a masonry nail through the flange, such as you find on plastic cable clips, then unscrew the M6 screw.

Now comes the clever part, obtain a 1/4" drive socket where the diameter is approximately, that of the diameter of the flange of the rivnut, and take a 12.9 M6 bolt long enough to pass through the socket and into the rivnut.


With a pair of mole grips, nip the socket so it cannot rotate, and tighten the bolt into the rivnut to 20Nm

Trust me when I say, there is not a pair of rivnut pliers on earth that will nip up as well as this.

When you've done this, liberally apply coppaslip to the threadform of the bolt that secures the lamp assembly.
