The one thing I don't understand is why the engine bay is so unclean. Surely, a private owner would recognise that the engine is the most important feature of this car and should look the part?

Not necessarily, my one had a lady owner before I bought it and it was filthy and neglected other than servicing. Not everyone realises what these cars are.
