Proximity sensor

Think its possible to mod this for our cars?
Maybe in tandem with Paul's lazy locking?

Sorry, is there meant to be a link, or just a general question?

If you are talking about a keyless entry system, then yes it's possible, but complex if you want it to work nicely.

The system needs to know if your key is nearby enough to allow the door to open. If it constantly transmits to the key to 'prod' it then the car battery wouldn't last long. Also if your key was left close to the car it would be replying all the time.

The way the commercial systems work is like this. You touch a sensor, usually built in the door handle. This triggers the system to send a fairly low power signal to the key (to make sure it only receives the signal if it's right by the car) and the key transmits back as though you had pressed the button. If the system sees a response from the 'right' key it will unlock.

You have to think of other things. What if you forget, and leave a key INSIDE the car. Then unless the system is clever enough, any old person can walk up and open the car.

So yes, possible, but to get a good system is going to be tricky.

Would this be a good system?

Also it looks like you will still have a battery issue with the proximity sensor as it's always searching.

I agree, but i'm hoping someone here might have other options/suggestions, just putting it out there.

I don't like the sound of that Joe, to be honest.

If you're looking for a project, how about the mirrors which dip when you select reverse?

You could probably do a keyless ignition sequence. The car knows when the key is in the car as it will beep when you try and lock the car with the key fob sat in it. (I do it loads :D)

No idea how the ignition barrel works but you could probably wire in some toggle switches for positions 1 and 2 and the mighty "Start" button for 3 :D Might look a bit odd in a 75 though, a ZT might pull off the look.

How about a damn big starting handle poking out of the front bumper? :getmecoat:

Puzzled.

When you say sat in it, do you mean in the ignition switch, or just say on the seat?

If the latter, then not sure how it knows. The system is a one way, transmit from fob to car. The only two way takes place with the key in the ignition switch. So how can it know the key is in the car? I'll have to try it but it has me very puzzled.

Yes sat in the seat with key in hand, although it's usually by the lock rather than my pocket, like you would want in a keyless ignition. The range is probably a couiple of inches or something for the transponder to work. Puts the nail in the coffin for my idea :D unless you hide the receiver for the transponder in the seat!!
