Combi boiler fault
 

Evening folks, as title,
another problem with this piece of ..... a protherm 80E combi. In the last few months its had a new pump, new gas actuator pcb and air pressure valve, kerching...! Now i'm told the diverter module is u/s, wont change to dhw on demand, heating works fine. i can get the hot water working by manually pressing the micro switch but the plunger from the diverter isn't moving. i looked at the diaphragm, no splits or holes, and the plunger isn't jammed.
If this fault entails another limb amputation then no, i'd rather renew with a decent make eg W/Bosch that have good reports.

I think this may be a case for MarkD3;)

I would replace the diaphragm with a new one, it is almost certainly the fault even if yours looks good there maybe a pinhole in it that you missed. They are usually less than a tenner and a 15 minute job.

On the other hand, repairing old boilers with new major parts is almost certainly a money pit, once one thing goes wrong, the rest of the parts are almost at the end of their life too.

If you do go down the new boiler route, the simple rule is, cheap boiler expensive parts, expensive boiler, cheap parts.

Yep renew i think is the way to go. Looking at a Worcester bosch model 28i that suits, but looking at a previous thread on combi faults that Mark added to, he seemed dubious with W/B? and he's the expert. Any others i should consider folks?

I couldn't recommend a manufacturer but I would certainly recommend insurance, especially on a combi boiler. We were advised to insure our after it was fitted and am glad we did, it's gone wrong several times. Only last week it was serviced as part of the insurance cover and it broke straight away, took them five days to fix it.
Ours is a vaillant and I wouldn't recommend it.

Hi Phil, thanks for the advise. Yes i will look into one of those monthly schemes that cover breakdowns and regular servicing:)

I have a Vailiant ecotec 831 and had no problems it did cost a bit but buy cheap buy twice. Whichever you go for make sure the heat exchanger is made from stainless steel & not aluminium, the aluminium ones corrode over time and ruin the boiler.

hi Eric avoid wb not overly impressed with them,baxi potterton make a half decent boiler the duotec mk1 or potterton gold but a good deal at the moment is the potterton titanium available here http://www.mrcentralheating.co.uk/th...cPath=213_209& with a 5 year warranty
dont get the duotec 2 or netatec there not as good
now back to your current boiler it could still be the diaphragm at fault or a seized diverter
