T reg Engine faliure update.....

So just an update on the t reg launch 75 we got that had full engine failure

So some of you know me and alice (afirth369) bought a t reg 1.8 club 75 dealer launch car. The head gasket had failed so we got that all sorted and running good. Less than 100 miles later alice was driving it to the waterwheel meet and the oil light came on and it started knocking out of nowhere. So the old girl got transported by the AA home.
I pulled the oil pan off as we found some metal in the oil…….
What I found was a pan full of bearing shell fragments. The big ends look like that have been having a party. So Friday afternoon I decided to pull the engine.
Took the big end caps off to find the shells on 2,3,4 had welded themselves to the con rods. Piston 1 was fine.
So we decided on Friday night Saturday morning we need a new engine for the old girl. So ebay we went….
We found Rover 45 1.8 auto that had low miles and thought this would be a good engine. Recent head gasket by a known company so we proceed to bid. Saturday night we got the notification that we won the car. All good new engine here we come.
Sunday, we went to collect the car and found that after driving it home from Manchester to Castleford its too good to rob its engine and strip.
A 44k mile Rover 45 club se with heated cloth front seats, 4 electric windows, alloys, headlight washer, rear parking sensors and a few optional extras fitted. It was sold new vis SMC in slough.

Now what do we do with it …. Plus we are still after an engine or try and rebuild the old girls original ………
The joys of Rovers….

I suppose you will have to work out the cost of a crank reground , new shells, and either new liners , or a rebore, if possible, Plus what ever else is needed to be refurbished whilst its in bits,
I would rebuild the engine myself, at least then you know you have a sound unit, As regards the 45, either use it as a daily drive, if its better than the 75 your using now, then sell it, once you have the 75 club done,

The original engine will get rebuilt. We were going to put a new engine in it and get it back on the road whist we rebuild the original.

I am going to get the crank looked at by a local engineering firm who rebuild engines.

It’s a lot better than most of the 75s we own …. Pretty nice car so can’t pull it apart. Registered less than a month before the factory closed.

A good intention Josh but isn't there a danger that, with your 75 back on the road, other things will crop up and the rebuilding project will languish? We've all seen abandoned restorations for sale with the owner saying "I just don't have the time to complete it" or "for family reasons". ;)

We all need a little push to get things done so I think Martin Butler's plan is worth serious consideration.

I'm unsure about what you've written.

Briodyjl01 26th October 2021 10:50

I apologise. It was supposed to say “what would you want for it?”

Saga Lout 26th October 2021 11:11

Ahh.

It stands me at £50, that's good enough for me if you'd like it.

Another 45 saved - and this is how rather large collections start! :D
Last year I got down to one Rover - my beloved 75 - however a couple of weeks ago I got a 'heads up' that a rather lovely ZS180 was being scrapped.

Oops! :D

Top marks to Saga Lout for the offer, too - and if we can help out with a heavily discounted Head Gasket set please let me know via PM.
