Which brand of oil makes the KV6 run quietest?
As titled.
Which brand of oil makes the KV6 run quietest? And is not likely to cause the tappets to be noisy? I will be sticking to 10w40 ACEA2 as per handbook. My tappets started to become noisy when using Mobil Super 2000. They got worse, and the engine starting sounding like a diesel, when using Shell Helix HX7. Perhaps the brand of oil was not the cause:shrug: Any thoughts? |
Possibly not the cause just oil but I've always ran mgr motors on triple qx eurocarparts brand. Cheap, changed regularly and hasn't let me down yet.

Sure it was the tappets?
Of all the V6s I've had the KV6 is top of the charts for strange but ultimately harmless clicks, ticks and rattles. |
My KV6 runs quietly and smoothly on Shell Helix HX7 10W-40 so don't think it is the oil.

My KV6 on Shell Helix HX7 as well, no problems with it. Has always had a slight tap on start up from brand new, which then goes away when the oil is fully circulated.

Thanks folks, will probably continue using the Shell then - the problem(s) did start before swapping to it after all and might be unrelated.

Many people reckon the K16 starts ticking and clicking whenever Castrol Magnatec's used. It seems to be something other than mass imagination, though I've never used it myself. So, it appears certain oil formulas can cause some engines to become noisier. It's basically a matter of suck it and see. The vital thing is to ensure your choice meets MGR's oil specs. This isn't difficult these days, since the criteria applied are pretty old hat.

I have read that about Magnatec regarding the KV6 too, although the posts were from a few years ago. As they share the same hydraulic tappets then maybe it is something to do with the effect of that oil on the K series tappets

Hence the thread! But no one has reported issues with other oils yet.
