Rattle from under car
 

So on road up to mot station and I get a clunk from under car around handbrake area so check on rimmers and It doesn’t seem that there are any exhaust brackets in that area can any confirm that is correct, definitely sounds like the exhaust hitting body ?

Sounds like what I had with my old 1.8T. The exhaust rubbers were tired so the exhaust wasn't held as firmly as its meant to be meaning the tunnel cross brace came within the range of exhaust movement.

In the short term turn the cross brace upside down and add a washer or two between it and the body until you get a chance to replace the mounting rubbers.

Thanks that’s what I was hoping for as that sounds exactly what it sounds like and I thought a rubber had snapped but couldn’t see a mount. Will get some ordered

Hi Rob,

From the twin downpipes the first unit is the catalytic converter and after that is the front silencer. This should have a wire attached to take a pair of mounting rubbers.

If one is able to safely inspect under the car and around the exhaust, check all mountings and the fittings of the exhaust heat shields. After a while, not just with our brand of car, the holes through which the bolts are fitted, corrode and enlarge allowing the shield to drop and rest on the exhaust pipe. The application of larger washers can solve this.

Fixed a rattle underneath my car yesterday, heat shield had pulled through the bolts, a couple of big washers and 15 minutes saw it fixed.

Annoying as hell until I got it sorted.

Hi it’s definitely the exhaust as it is a heavy clunk and I posted to ask in case some said there was something else that was hanging about in that area, I had a quick look and a shake on the exhaust at the tailpipe and I know it’s not where it was but I was trying to check the mounts

The same job was required on a local members car the weekend just gone, always best to replace with alloy washers or discs as if metal ones are use they will do just the same as the original washers did and eat through the shield once again.

Have you tried to see if the rear silencer lifts up and down at the rear of the silencer? Stripped threads on the bracket that the rubber fits to.
