Hans's digital temp gauge

Recieved Hans's temp gauge this morning and pleased to announce it is all fitted and working perfectly. Many thanks to Hans for this marvalous bit of kit. When I find out how to add pics to these posts I will do so . But at the moment I am :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

T-Cut 26th March 2009 12:04

Great news! Did you have to do much dismantling to connect the board? Did you record the installation? It would make an excellent HowTo.

The Jugs 26th March 2009 12:11

Hi T-Cut, Hans had already assembled the unit so just had to slot it in. I've put the display in the symphony blanking plate so that was easy. Just as easy scotch locked the three wires to the radio harness, so the only bit of dismantling was removing the radio head unit. Run it with the obd trip test and its spot on.

Kandyman 26th March 2009 12:24

Hi Robert,

If you want any help with the pictures email them over to me and I'll post them up for you.

The Jugs 26th March 2009 12:37

Hi Kandyman, Can you PM your email add. then i can send them through my virgin acccount.

Looks good keith / Robert!
Mine arrived too this morning but alas it will be another fortnight before I get to see it!!!!!!!!!!
Big thanks to Hans for all his work

T-Cut 26th March 2009 16:52

I can see these digital gauges selling like hot cakes. Hope Hans can cope!
Just ordered a kit. These are what the 75/ZT has been waiting for!

Worth the wait!

The Jugs 26th March 2009 16:53

Nice job there Keith, take some getting used to the beeping everytime you switch the ignition on. Can drive without worry now :)

kbret 26th March 2009 17:33

I connected the unit to the cigar lighter (via an in-line fuse) as was suggested by Hans. This means the unit is permanently live so doesn't bleep when the ignition is turned on.

Not sure if this is the best way as the display is always on but I would think these displays last for years, maybe Hans could comment.

So Hans did set it up to self test the beeper. I think that's important. Since the gizmo beeps an overheat warning (in case you're watching where you're driving rather than admiring the display), you need to be sure it actually works.
I'll live with that. Excellent!

Cigar lighter and beep on startup.

Oops,
My cigar lighter is not on permanent feed.
If you think the beep at start up is annoying , let me know.
I can remove it from the software or make it a shorter duration.
Thanks for your feedback.

Hans

The Jugs 26th March 2009 20:11

Yes Hans did , only 10-15 sec's or so , loud enough to be noticable but wont have people holding their ears saying what on earths that noise. Sounds quite good having safety audio going off when ignition switched on :).

T-Cut 26th March 2009 20:28

I think a 3 second beep would be optimal. Anything longer will become annoying and some people may want to disarm it.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...ide/Idiot2.gif

The Jugs 26th March 2009 20:37

Mind you i've not timed it so may be shorter. Doesn't seem an annoying length, but suppose it will come down to personal preference.

The unit is working fine at the moment, the only thing I would change is the length of time the alarm sounds when the ignition is turned on 2-3 seconds would be enough (6 seconds on mine).

I ordered mine on Sunday,Hans built and posted it on Monday and it arrived yesterday (Thursday) not bad going.

Exactly how is the display held in place on the plastic front panel? Is it just glued in with something like superglue?

Also, how about putting the display in the middle of the long thin walnut panel just above the cup holder? Is there any reason why not?

It looks like the front bezel has two mounting screws. They go through the backing panel and nip eveything together.

I was thinking about that too. I guess you just have to remove it and check the lie of the land.

Yes but the green backing panel needs something to grip onto so you can tighten it. If that's too far back then the digital panel will be too far back from the front screen.
It will certainly fit into the walnut panel, but I'm not sure what the green backing panel would fix to to hold it all in place.

The Jugs 29th March 2009 18:57

I understand just what you are looking at, not sure how Hans or Keith got round it, but I cut the hole so tight that the display was a tight push into it. The key really, I suppose, is to cut the hole smaller than neccessary then, with a fine file, patiently enlarge the hole untill the display fits tightly. Thats how I managed it.

jcwatrichmond 30th March 2009 09:54

The gauge will just fit in the walnut plastic strip. There isn't much room but it goes inside the strengthening strips running along the inside edges.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ond/Gauge1.jpg

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ond/Gauge2.jpg

The plastic boxing that the walnut fascia attaches to is awkwardly shaped and it's hard to see how the gauge can be fitted using the threaded pins and nuts.
The main body of the gauge just fits inside the centre box, but the threaded pins go outside the box uprights.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ond/Gauge3.jpg

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ond/Gauge5.jpg

The last photo shows the whole gauge sitting on top of the complete plastic fittings. I was thinking of slotting the gauge and its green strip down from above to give the green strip something to grip to but I think it would weaken the structure, and anyway it would damage the fitting clips. The green strip and the main body of the gauge are all one unit.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ond/Gauge4.jpg

The only way that I can see would be to cut away a little of the box front uprights to be able to fit the gauge in and hold it by a tight fit (glued?) of the front casing in the walnut fascia as suggested by The Jugs. You'd also have to trim the green board a little on the long edges.
I'm reluctant to ruin the walnut fascia, if it doesn't work, and tight fits are known to come loose later in life.

Hello Keith,
It looks very good. I may be being a bit thick but I don;t fully understand how the gauge and the car fascia panels all fit together.
I can see that you've removed some of the front of the inside plastic fitting to get the green plate to fit flush, but surely that part of the fitting has the two plastic spring hooks holding the front walnut fascia hooked through it and in the way of the green plate. If you removed these, how does the walnut fascia plate attach to the inner fitting? Is it glued?

Hi John, when you cut the front panel the spring hooks are removed so it is important to make sure you know its exact position before you start.

I cut the back plate (hashed area in photo) using a dremel. Then fitted the display (green back bit) postioned the front panel and drilled two small holes using the green back plate as a template through the front panel. you then have the exact position for the front display.

Although the two pins will hold it all together I did glue for added strengh (dont tighten the pins up to tight or they pull out of the display, dont ask how I know)

The car's mounting panel isn't at right angles to the mounting bolts on the display bezel. Did you have to make a wedge-shaped filler to account for this? Does the screen bezel stand proud along its bottom edge?

where can I order one from.

Time Searcher 1st April 2009 14:26

Had an email from Hans at 17:13 on Monday stating that "The parcel is in the mail". :smilie_re:The parcel arrived in C.Scotland in the post this a.m. Less than 2 days, magic...
The Temp. Gauge appears to be very professionally made and from what I read, it will do exactly what I bought it to do.
I shall be fitting it in to the blank panel on the Symphony radio where I should be able to see it with only a sideways glance. So together with the Gerry Tee I will feel 'much safer' for our 2000km trip to Central Portugal with regard to my waterworks...
Cheers, Martin

No I didn't have to make a wedge.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/kbret/3403859701/

I have just had a look and there is a tiny gap at the bottom of the front bezel.

Just a thought about fitting the display in the spare cup holder.

I'm rather tall and have my seat right back so I can see the display, if you sit forward then you might have a problem, although the unit is fitted with an overtemp alarm it is nice to see your engine temperature at a glance.

Ah, the angle isn't as large as it looks in some photos. This looks a nice fit. I think I'll put mine in there. Thanks for the details.
