Removal of the dreaded tinworm

My 75 is having the rot removed from the sill areas around the jacking points here are a few photos to show the work, the first is the 'patch' done to get her through the MOT last year and the rest ' the proper job'
This was done by the same fella that did Dawn's car, I can't reccomend him enough, I'll send pics of the other work later.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fe5c31adce.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...38a37ba332.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...231b6cfeda.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6c9856d2bf.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7b9b2fcb40.jpg

Hi, that's a nice bit of welding there..:}

hinged_bap 11th January 2018 06:25

that looks a nice job.

Dawn 11th January 2018 06:47

Its Tom who did my Cowley car, Bones. He's a top chap!

dave lincs 11th January 2018 08:06

Roy you should make more effort to clean those areas of your car to stop this happening like I do:D

Sticking a cowpat over the rot to hide it doesn't count though Dave :D

Does he profile the replacement metal himself, or has he cut it from a donor sill?

Bashed it out himself..

I'm not sure if I can mention his name on here as he is not a forum member, If I can I will post a link

To be honest it's really my fault for not keeping on top of it, once I get it back and the weather warms up I'm going to flood it with some jollop to hopefully stop it happening again, I'll post pics of the other side and the front sill when I get chance.

7T5 11th January 2018 09:05

That's a work of art, looks spot on.

Dawn 11th January 2018 09:09

He's a panel beater, you wouldn't believe the panels he can make! All new metal

I am sure he til me he worked for a Rover body shop when he first started as well.

dave lincs 11th January 2018 09:15

it looks excellent work:D

I'll post pics of the other side, that was bad as well.

Dawn 11th January 2018 16:34

Ilkeston train station is very close, if it helps anyone, as well!

Sonic ZS 11th January 2018 17:13

That looks like a very nice piece of work ;) Good to see it being done properly (cut out) and not just patched over. Pump it full of Dinitrol and it'll probably last better than the original :}

Out of interest, did your man treat all the rusty internal surfaces of the inner sill panel and jacking mount ?

Yes, looks from the pics like he got all the surface rust off somehow, then the outside has been done with red oxide then matt black smooth then it's going to be gone over in copperleaf.

Dawn 11th January 2018 19:22

Yes, he cleans the inner part up and treats/paints it. Mine were black sills as its Cowley so he painted them as well.

Post it anyway! If the mods take the hump about it they can remove it.

And Tom has worked his magic on the white one this week too, another great job.

Looks fantastic. I’m needing my sills done on my coupe...

championdaddy 12th January 2018 09:33

I really wish I could find a welder near me that finishes the job off that good

I only have an "MOT welder" as per the first picture. Who plasters everything with black underseal.....not matter the colour of the car.

He doesn't get the aesthetic point of view

vacuman 12th January 2018 13:30

Given the increasing demand for this repair perhaps there's an opportunity for the club to encourage one of the after-market panel companies to run off a batch of sill repair sections?

Would save Tom and others having to recreate from scratch each time.

7T5 12th January 2018 15:32

Great work, im going to need mine done this year.

He's not just a welder but a panel beater, and by the look of the finished result, a master of his craft.

It’s handy if there is someone close by that can do the work but distance for me isn’t an issue. I’d travel the length of the country if I have to if it means getting the job done right. I already have travelled large distances for work on all my cars. It’s worth it to get the job done properly.

Exactly the right approach in my humble opinion.

And i would. .... and have to done extent.
But having kids on my own somewhat limits my traveling.
Quality welding is not a quick job........ so add that to the travel time......... limits me even more.

Sprinter 14th January 2018 11:04

It's good to know he's nearby, but I hope I don't ever need him. :D

God knows we've tried, and keep trying.......

Pete 14th January 2018 11:32

I have asked Roy to post the details of the company who undertook the work.

I believe there is also a chap in Hampshire who does the same job to an excellent standard. I'll try to find his details and post them too.

I doubt there is much need, the 75's sills are such a simple shape to bend as needed. Not a complex bend as on some cars.

I can recommend a local to me company for dealing with dents, pulling out of dents and repainting. They fixed my crushed outer sill as good as new without any filling or welding. http://www.stationroadbodyshopleeds.co.uk/

Pete 14th January 2018 14:29

For anyone living in the South there is a chap used by member higed_bap called Paul Baker Custom Metalwork Ltd. Based in Fishers Pond Hampshire the work looks to be a good standard too.

The thread about his car (with some pics) is here

Their website is http://www.pbcm.co.uk/

Thankyou Dawn, I have saved his site on my PC :D

Dawn 14th January 2018 14:53

This might be a silly suggestion, but could Tom make a few repair panels up for people who can't get to him in person? I assume he'd need paying upfront, but I don't see a difference in him making them or a person buying them from a panel manufacturer? Considering what he charges for making AND fitting, I doubt there would be a huge price difference from his to bulk manufacture prices?

NigelOBB 14th January 2018 22:51

It would be an idea Dawn

We could do with finding someone in the North East who can repair to this standard . Both my sills have been patched but I fear that the rust is returning even after filling with waxoyl

maxi_crawf 15th January 2018 11:35

Just to let you know,

I was asked if the inner sill is treated before it's all closed up, Tom tells me he treats the inner surfaces with Jenolite then paints with zinc primer, it sticks well and welds easy I'm told.

Arctic 20th January 2018 09:29

Great thread and excellent workmanship by Tom, I think he may be busy with our cars in the future, what timescale does he need for this job to be carried out, I presume someone must have had all the jacking points done in one go ?

Dawn 20th January 2018 10:03

I only needed rears and I dropped off at midday, by 5pm one side was done, and by the same time the following day so was the other and painted. He only does matt black, though, like on the Cowley cars. With his facilities he doesn't feel he can do other colours justice.

Hmmm. I wonder what a Cowley Mk2 would look like?

Dawn 20th January 2018 11:13

I think people just get the paint done afterwards on the later ones. My black Mk2 will want doing eventually, but I feel Tom's workmanship is worth letting someone else paint it after. It's not like he leaves them bare, so you have time. I might even have a go at flashing it over myself. I did my first 75 that way, and no one noticed!

We (Me and Trikey) dropped our cars off on the Saturday and on Tuesday evening he was emailing pictures of the progress on mine and by thursday he had done both, I had both rear sills done on mine plus the front offside sill where it had been jacked up behind the jacking point and this had cracked the paint and underseal allowing water to get in(owners beware) Trikey had both rear sills done.

So effectivley 5 jacking point sills.
