17" serpents

Have decided to take the plunge and go look for a set of serpent wheels.

It was even I missed out on the sale of them or felt I couldn't justify the prices some sets were going for.

Finally found some on the bay and they were dropped off Thursday. Took them down for a refurb and powder coat, either ready later today( sat.) or Monday.

The total cost( don't tell the misses) for the purchase/ chemical wash/ repair scuffs and powder coat paint job baked on and paint the centre caps comes to 400 pounds.

Thought at first that I had spent a bit too much, but once I get them back looking like new wheels and on the car, sure it will seem worth every penny.

Still probably wont tell the misses though:eek::eek::eek:

Just tell swimbo that someone in the club wanted to get rid of them and you offered £20 for them and he accepted. Dib dib dob.

You really can't beat Serpents IMO :drool4:

2nd best for me would have to be Meteors

On the lookout myself....and as for expense, I won't be telling the missus either:getmecoat:

I have a set of each available in Greater Manchester!

Can you please PM me with pics/prices?

@Handyjackdaniels....have you any pictures?

Arryhall 24th November 2018 15:33

I've got serpents and they really set the car off. Truth be known, they were the thing that really sealed the deal for me when I got the car. I knackered one last year in a pothole and it cost me £80 to get it repaired and powdercoated and looked awesome. I unfortunately have a tendency to curb them though. Not badly, just with potholes and stones and stuff and they end up looking a bit tatty fairly quickly. I wish I was better at keeping this car neat and tidy.

Maybe I'll try washing it some time. But probably not.

I have to agree :}. When I got my '75 12 yrs ago, it had Serpents, though all were in need of a refurb. I was fortunate in getting a full set of brand new Meteors for a knock down price, so ran with those for the best part of 10 yrs, before finally getting the Serpents repaired and powder coated. At the time I couldn't decide which I preferred, but I now think the Serpents just have the edge. The Meteors are way easier to clean though.

A direct comparison:

Was hoping that the wheels would be ready for today, apparently they can do a same day turnaround if they are powder coated, but alas not, so its Monday.

Will put some pics up when they are on the car.

Got centre caps with the wheels so got hold of some new badges from Jezzer here on forum to finish them off:drool4::drool4:

Just off to poor a large glass of wine for swmbo and explain why we cant pay the mortgage this month.:D:D:D:D:D:D

Serpents definitely the best and most sophisticated for the 75!

Hi Steve,

Who did you use for the refurb?

Paul (Championdaddy) in Letchworth organised a great refurb of some Hairpins for me a couple of years ago for my previous 75, but I can't remember who it was that did them :duh:

.... and get those pictures up! :D:D

Hello John,

Paul lives in the same street as me!

Not sure who he used but I have used Diamond wheels in Letchworth, should be picking them up tomorrow.

Steve.

Our cars always look better in the summer months, so don't worry about it. Just get the photos up and show off the new wheels. They'll look stunning after a refurb :}.

Well, the wheels come back today, not impressed with one of them, even after them telling me that all will be no problem making the look good.

That's disappointing. The top coat looks fine, but it looks like they didn't take enough care with the repair prior to powder coating . Hopefully they can sort it for you.

Cliff

marinabrian 27th November 2018 17:00

Did they use an angle grinder to "polish up " the rim prior to refurbishing?

I suspect that wheel wasn't prepared at all, or if it was, the "refurbisher" could do with a visit to Specsavers :getmecoat:

Scaramanga 27th November 2018 19:07

Why are people, in this case 'the refurbisher' so lazy...?

As my primary school teacher used to say 'slap dash!' to those (often me) who rushed or didn't pay attention.

A phrase I now use a lot on my teenagers :p:

I hope they sort it to your satisfaction. Send the missus to sort them AFTER you've told her how much you paid (obviously from a safe distance). If she's anything like my wife she will take out her displeasure on him :getmecoat:

Well spotted!!:o:o:o:o

Arctic 27th November 2018 22:55

Hi Steve.
Expensive work not to be carried out an 100% standard, hope they sort it for you, as above lazy workmanship on preparation :( why do some people not take care in what they do ? does not make sense if they have to do it all over again.

handyjackdaniels 28th November 2018 07:51

I took the offending wheel into their reception and dropped it onto the desk, said I wasn't happy with the finish to that wheel.

There was some kerb scuffing to the wheel, pointed it out when I dropped them off...…..not a problem they said.

After some discussion between them all, some in Polish which p****d me off a bit, they said they couldn't fill it close to the rim as when the tyre is replaced it would take the filler off.

I mentioned that a weld and fill would surely do it...…..that's expensive they said. They quoted me a figure when I dropped them off. By this time there was four of them squashed into the small reception, so I said I would come back and discuss things. Going back this morning.

I paid by debit card so cannot stop the transaction or claim off the card people.

Annoying.:mad::mad::mad:

Car's going in this morning to get the mechanic I use to fit the two suspension assemblies bought from Mat at DMGRS. Will drop in on the way.

But that's the part of the wheel that normally gets curbed, and other places seem to have no issue in making an effective repair . The 5 serpents I had refurbed by the Wheel Specialist all had curbing damage close to the edge, and all were sorted. Don't know the technique they used, but I suspect it was something more resilient than bog standard filler, as they have all happily survived 2 lots of tyre fitting so far.

They really need to sort this for you.
