Colour change

Just a hypothetical question, but if in the future I was going to invest in a respray at a future time to tidy my car up, I might be tempted to change my cars colour.

I currently have white gold paintwork and aubergine leather interior.

The three body colours I like most are (1) white (2) Damson (3) Wedgewood blue.

Please can I ask your view on 2 questions. Firstly which colour would work best? I think white or damson would agree best with the interior.

Secondly, I love that off-white colour rover used. I think this was used when they launched and it was old English white. Am I correct as a brighter white was also used which I'm less keen on.

Many thanks,

Jim

Arran or old English White paint code is NNX, the brighter white is Dover White code NDJ.

Be aware there is an awful amount of work required in a colour change, not to mention the expense ;)

Thank you Brian. I know some sprayers will do the car body alone but not the door inners/ boot inside and under bonnet. This keeps the cost down as you are right its very expensive to do everything and take off the doors.

It's something I've been toying with for a time. white gold is okay but I prefer the other colours.

Rich in Vancouver 30th December 2019 17:32

You don't necessarily have to remove the doors for a colour change but there is a lot of time involved removing and replacing weatherstrip, door cards and fittings and cleaning out all of the nooks and crannies in the door jambs then masking the openings. If you were to do most of the labour that would save a lot of expense.

Rich, I was thinking of leaving the insides in white gold but just getting a professional respray on the outside. I love that creamy old English white. I think that would look good. What do you think?

I think that would be a terrible mistake that would spoil the car forever

I'm not so sure, I'm not a fan of white gold so I may not be entirely unbiased...........I can't quite recall who it was, but there was a member who repainted their BRG?? Mk2 saloon in white, and it looked good :xmas-smiley-008:

trikey 30th December 2019 19:01

Why not get it wrapped instead, it would be a lot less work!

Here’s one I spotted in Norwich, this guy likes gold I reckon 👍

It's not the colour change I'm concerned about , Brian , in fact I love the old English white . It's having a white exterior and a gold interior which disturbs me :xmas-smiley-008:

HOLY MOLY!!!! That's horrid, someone call the taste police......... Neee naaa Neee naaa.......

Comfortably Numb 30th December 2019 19:30

There's no interior paint showing when the doors are shut.
Unless BRG paint was totally messed up, I wouldn't repaint in OE White, much as I do like OE white. If you don't ever intend selling the car, you might save money by doing an outside paint job. But as a buyer, I'd rather have an all over White Gold in well maintained nick than a half painted OEW one. And that Merc looks revolting - brash and brassy especially with disgusting black wheels. They always remind me of the cheapest toy cars Woolworths used to sell, with the clip-in one piece wheels-and-axles. Especially if it's a pre-facelift with all the extra chrome, I reckon the 75 looks best in strong or dark colours that set off the chrome.

jim_k 30th December 2019 19:54

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe this is a bad idea I'm thinking.

Two questions. Would it be worth trying to make the paintwork standout out a little more with a deep clean? I've never used anything like T-cut so nervous of this.

That gold wrap looks awful. However I've seen wrapping done on an old episode of Wheeler Dealers. Does anyone have a good experience of it and how much is it?

trikey 30th December 2019 20:02

A full machine polish and detail will bring the paintwork up a treat.

Just wrong !

Google and search in YouTube " plastidip spray car". Funny and temporary cheap way of colour change. Ugly but also very decent and nice results, depending your taste. Cheap, and if you do not like it anymore, easy to remove.

Yup, agree 100% with Trikey. Member Nobby has a White Gold tourer which he keeps in A1 condition. The paintwork looks amazing and really "pops". I had never really liked White Gold 'till I saw his car and realised just how it good it can look.

If you lack the confidence and tools to do the job yourself, look for a detailer locally and get the paintwork clayed, machine polished, and protected. You'll be amazed at the improvement. Cheaper than a respray too :xmas-smiley-008:.

Just out of interest with the wraps ( I'm not thinking of doing it) doesn't the vinyl get nicks and scratches from stone chips etc and start looking as if someone has scratched a bit up with their nail or something?

Or is it extra tough and doesn't mark at all?

FLYING BANANA 31st December 2019 10:29

Give Karl Hooley of Devils Detailing a bell. He gave my Sunspot ZT a Ceramic Coating. I can pm you his number if interested.

There is a dent on the rear door of the merc, if that was done after it was wrapped then it is pretty tough stuff!

If it was wrapped with the dent already there then someone wants a slap 🤣

Telferstr 1st January 2020 15:00

Dorchester Red would be a good choice and match the interior.
My first 75 was that colour and people admired it a lot, and I receive many compliments on how good the car looked.

CDT Player 6th January 2020 22:51

The easiest and cheapest way to do this would be to sell the gold 75 and then buy one in a colour you like.

Worth noting that White Gold with the aubergine interior is rare so it would be a shame to change it.

M17TT 7th January 2020 07:39

A properly done chrome wrap like the above would probably cost roughly the same as a respray.

I'm currently in hospital right now recovering from a hip operation.

This car nearly put me in a coma. 🤢

Not sure it's a dent Andy, I think the shiny wrap is accentuating the shape of the car plus optical illusion from the building being reflected. I think!

EDIT - sunglasses smilie meaning protect my eyes, I don't think it's cool, it's hideous!:cool2:
