British Superbikes

As some of you know we are following the progress of a relation of my wifes (Ryan Vickers) in the British Superbike Championship this year.
Today saw the last of the pre-season testing at Silverstone
I'll let Ryan describe it in his own words
Ryan Vickers #7
"Well that's it for the Silverstone Test, we had some great sessions learning to ride the bike in the wet which was very positive! We also had some great dry weather riding 👍 unfortunately in the final session of the day I had a high speed crash at Turn 2 tucking the front at about 150 mph, luckily I got away with it, with just a sore foot! I know my mistake and that is the main thing, it’s all part of the learning curve! Sorry to the team for making a mess of the bike but we will be back and stronger than ever at round 1"

Typical bike racer 150 mph crash and more concerned about the bike than himself.;)
Anyone else going to round 1 Easter weekend
Cheers Ian

lucky NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-, at that speed I'd expect a lot worse.
Goodness knows how they pick themselves up and walk away as if nothing had happened. My legs would be jelly.

How they get all that grip from two 50p size bits of rubber in contact with the tarmac astounds me!:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown: The only time I got my knee down was when it was followed by the rest of me, before somersaulting into a tree! They don't move you know and are very hard! :getmecoat: Note to bikers - always look out for a soft place to land!:}

I was caining my CB750 when a corner caught me out on West Mersey Island. In the split second I was about to come off I saw a feel of trees, the hedge was ramped and saw myself being inpailed by a tree branch 50 ft up in the air. Luckely I was able to drop the bike and ended up down the road on the hedge. Talk about having a thousand yard stare for the rest of the day

Ian G 20th April 2019 19:27

Well that's Ryan's first BSB qualifying session over with.
13 th fastest so inside of the 4th row on the starting grid
Team and rider very much up for tomorrow's race day.

I was out one day with my mate, he had a CBR1000, I had the ST. He got ahead of me, I came round a right hand bend, he was sitting at the roadside a bit further on. I stopped, he was actually shaking! Said he had no idea how he'd got round the last corner. We went back and there were actually tyre tracks on the embankment about a foot above road level, he'd done a wall of death! Rest of the ride was rather sedate.

My son has an R1 Anniversary Edition and I dread it every time he’s out on it.

Last year he was supposed to drop us off at the airport but delegated this task to our younger son.
At the time he should have been picking us up at home he was lying by the roadside after crawling about 50 yds. through rough terrain and a ditch. He mis judged the length of road between two corners and simply washed out.

He was extremely lucky with just bruises and his bike, although insurers wanted to write it off was back repaired by my son within weeks.
It needed a full set of exterior trim which the lucky NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- purchased new off eBay from someone making an R1 into race trim so didn’t require the road trim

I hope he learned a lesson :duh:

Day 1 Donington Park free practice
A little off the pace today and unsure quite why but hopfull of an improvement today before qualifying and race one later.
Having said that 1.3 seconds covering the top 20 or so on the grid.
When did that last happen in F1?

Well that didn't quite go to plan.
Got quicker but had an off in free practice 3 and broke collarbone.
But I suspect he will be back in the saddle for Brands next month.

He's young enough to bounce a bit so I expect he'll be back in the saddle soon..
We'll be up for the Snetterton round in July which of course is his local track so lot's of support for him there.
The British sidecar championship also has a round at Snet that weekend as well very special to watch.

Ian G 27th May 2019 20:25

Still made the grid for Sundays race :D
Surgery booked for Thursday to have a plate put in the damaged shoulder lot's of phisiotherepy to do but should be ready for Brands Hatch on 14th - 16th June..

Ian G 17th June 2019 19:30

Hi everyone I've not posted on here about Ryans latest exploits until I knew the outcome of the latest Brands Hatch episode.
Unless you follow the races closely you won't know that following his broken collar bone at the Donington round from which he has recovered well Ryan once again had a nasty high speed crash in practice (he managed this one on his own) and went into the barrier very fast after losing the front end over the bump going into clearways and ended up heavily concussed, Following the crash he was taken to Kings hospital in London where he was kept under observation.
I am now happy to report that Ryan recovered consiousness today (Monday) and is progressing well and has even asked for a Nandos take away.
Here's the official line.

gnu 17th June 2019 19:50

Bad luck again. I wish Ryan a speedy and full recovery.

Ian G 22nd June 2019 17:12

Update on Ryan
He was released from hospital this morning and plans to be back at the Snetterton round in July. The team are giving the Knockhill round a miss in favour of a couple of days testing to get the rider back to fitness and happy with himself and the bike.
Snetterton is Ryans home round so everyone is hoping that his luck changes for his local event, we'll be there anyone else fancy a day at the races?

Cheers Ian

Ian G 22nd July 2019 12:13

The return
Well he's back in the saddle and I'm happy to report that after a sensibly steady start that saw Ryan qualify in 20th place and a very low speed off in race one he bounced back in race two and made a good start that saw him 16th at the end of lap one and he got involved with a 5 way battle for a top 10 finish, unfortunately on lap 8 he got forced off the circuit and dropped to 17th, there then followed a chase that gave Ryan a chance to shine and saw him get a well deserved 12th place at the end of the race.

Next round 3rd/4th August at Thruxton
Cheers Ian

Hi Guys
Well a day of mixed fortunes yesterday.
Race one result (10th) was good and proved that he can run times with some of the top half dozen, although Ryan did make things a bit more difficult by rubbing wheels and dropping back to 17th at one stage.
Race two ended on the floor after some "help" from another rider through the complex.

A walk in the Park...aka... Time to strap on the big balls !!

The BSB circus stops off at Cadwell Park this weekend and day one has seen some very mixed conditions.
Dry for free practice #1 and so wet for this afternoons free practice #2 that many stayed in the warm and dry and didn't venture out on track.
Ryan loves this track and having only done a half dozen laps in the wet all season he took the opportunity to have a run out in both sessions today, he's learning more about getting the best out of the RAF Regular and Reserve/Lee Hardy Racing Kawasaki all the time.
Heres todays practice results..
Practice #1 (dry)
1. Josh Brookes (Be Wiser Ducati) 1m:27.221s
2. Danny Buchan (FS-3 Racing Kawasaki) +0.096s
3. Tommy Bridewell (Oxford Racing Ducati) +0.544s
4. Scott Redding (Be Wiser Ducati) +0.564s
5. Andrew Irwin (Honda Racing) +0.654s
6. Peter Hickman (Smiths Racing BMW) 0.664s
7. Ryan Vickers (RAF Regular & Reserve Kawasaki) +0.795s
8. Jason O'Halloran (McAMS Yamaha) +1.026s
9. Glenn Irwin (Tyco BMW) +1.220s
10. Christian Iddon (Tyco BMW) +1.220s

Practice #2 (wet)
1. Tommy Bridewell (Oxford Racing Ducati) 1m:40.223s
2. Josh Brookes (Be Wiser Ducati) +2.207s
3. Ryan Vickers (RAF Regular & Reserve Kawasaki) +3.508s
4. Claudio Corti (Team WD-40 Kawasaki) +5.410s
5. David Allingham (EHA Racing Yamaha) +5.866s
6. Bradley Ray (Buildbase Suzuki) +5.965s
7. Dean Harrison (Silicone Engineering Kawasaki) +6.345s
8. Peter Hickman (Smiths Racing BMW) +6.502s
9. Joe Francis (Lloyd and Jones Bowker BMW) +6.881s
10. Fraser Rogers (Gearlink Kawasaki) +8.011s

The rest of the weekend looks better weather wise so fingers crossed.
Cheers Ian

Ian G 18th August 2019 20:16

The weekend finished on a high note for Ryan and the RAF Reular and Reserve team..
Race one... From his p18 grid slot a great ride saw him through to 10th at the end of the 18 laps..
Race two... With the grid positions being based on race 1 lap times Ryan started from 11th spot the end of the race saw him claim 7th place and the best result of his rookie season :D:D:D
Highlights can be seen on ITV4 8pm on Wednesday evening.,

Ian G 19th October 2019 19:21

Brands Hatch update..
Well the team has had better starts to a weekends racing..
Friday free practice #1.... 14 laps then engine seized..
Friday free practice #2.... Very changeable condition saw Ryan get caught out on a damp section whilst on slicks this resulted in a VERY close inspection of the Clearways gravel trap, fortunately without injury to Ryan or the bike..

Saturday
Free practice completed without any issue:D
Qualifying... On a drying track with the fast times coming at the very end of the session Ryan unfortunately got blocked on his final run and missed out going through to quali 2.. 21st on the grid is his worst qualifying result of the year:duh:
Race 1... Clean start from his lowly grid position saw him making steady progress until on lap 6 a rider a few places in front of him had a massive engine failure going into Surtees bend and YES you've guessed Ryan was one of three riders following that crashed on the oil from the engine blow, a very heavy crash that saw Ryan suffering with leg pain but no apparent injuries so hopefully he'll be fit to race tomorrow..
Sometimes if you don't have bad luck you don't get any luck at all:shrug::shrug::getmecoat::getmecoat:

Ian G 21st October 2019 20:30

Yes such a jump from 600 stock to a superbike (first rider ever to make that jump) that delivers more than twice the power, Ryan said that it was like learning a new circuit every time out, also it's easy to forget that next year will only be his fifth year of racing on tarmac having started in thundersports in 2016.

look how far Ryan rolls (top of picture) after hitting the oil when the rider in front suffered a blown engine. 130 mph crash and so lucky to walk away with just a few cuts and a dislocated finger, I saw the leathers afterwards and there was some serious damage.

Becomes more impressive when I tell you that the Ducati times were set on fresh tyres and Ryans time was on the 18th lap of a race length run..

A pretty good result from Ryan and the RAF Regular and Reserve supported Kawasaki superbike team..

Very much so and Ryan often say's how proud he is to carry that number, also 3 x 7 = 21 which was his number in 600 superstock when he won that championship in 2018 by 150 points.Let's hope it's lucky 7 in 2020.

His lap times are shown at the top..
To give you some idea of the difference between this and a production based race bike at Snetterton this weekend Ryan on his BSB race bike was lapping around 14 seconds a lap quicker than this guy and Ryans times would have just got him into the top 10 in BSB superbike qualifying..
cheers

Hi, I’m hitting 70 shortly, just sold my ‘big’ bike a beautiful Honda cb500xa with every extra known to man, including a professional reworked seat. I’ve just put a deposit on a 2008 Honda cbf250. It’s a lightweight single with 22 bhp, should be fine for everything I want to do. I’ve always been a smaller bike person, larger faster thirstier bikes are not for me.

I'm hitting 84 shortly. During the course of last year I sold my Honda CB 1,000R.--Now riding around on a 1964 motobecane mobylette. 50cc engine.

I've tried but it just won't do the 0 to 100 in eight seconds like I'm used to.

Anything on two wheels is fantastic. As for motorbikes I prefer 130-140 kg bikes. A 125 is a bit underpowered, a Honda cb200 is just about ideal for me, I had one in the 70s. I’m going to deep clean and service my new acquisition and tax it from April. I find it’s possible to do a 200 mile day on a 250, whereas a 125 would be too much for me.

A good start to the season for Ryan saw him finish 9th place in race 1 and 3 and 11th in race 2. good results that had Ryan running as high as 4th and end results would have been better but for some high tyre wear later in the races.

For those interested the next three rounds.... Knockhill 11th-12th July..Brands Hatch 24th-25th July...and Thruxton 31st July-1st August are all being shown live via the QUEST channel so are free to view and you will get about 6 hrs of racing both days..

Thanks Steve
Yes some good results in some very strange weather conditions ( I got sunburnt and almost drowned..lol) The team has put in some long hours since Brands to try to get on top of the handling issues with the bike and it certainly was showing a marked improvement at Thruxton to quote Ryan "It's better but there lot's more to come". As you said a good qualifying saw him 3rd quickest and followed by 4th place in race 1. Race two and a solid 2nd place was lost after being given a long lap penalty which dropped him back into the following pack and he just tried a little to hard in the complex on the last lap but apart from being winded he was OK. Race 4 was another solid 4th in difficult conditions but overall the team came away well pleased with their 26 point weekend. Ryan now sit's 11th in the championship but a few more good results could see him into the top 8 shootout for the championship.
It's worth remembering that after many years in MotoX Ryan had his first race on tarmac less than 6 years ago so some great steps have been made from that first homebuilt Honda 500 to winning the Stock 600 championship in 2018 and now on a superbike mixing it with the best, and still young at 22.
No stopping "The O show" on that Yamaha this year though :D:D

Ian G 20th August 2021 18:18

Cadwell Park see's the arrival of the British Superbike Championship this weekend and Ryan got everyone's attention in free practice 2 today by setting a time of 1.25.816.
This is the fastest lap ever on two wheels around Cadwell Park
Bennetts British Superbike Championship free practice two - conditions dry

1 7 Ryan VICKERS GBR Kawasaki - RAF Regular & Reserve Kawasaki 1:25.816

Fingers crossed mate.. Looking forward to Snetterton in a couple of weeks as I said I've got your tickets and I'll give you a call when we get to Norfolk to arrange things.

Ian G 22nd August 2021 09:16

A rather large crash and some superhuman efforts.
After a great Fridays practice things turned upside down in Saturdays qualifying
when only on his second flying lap Ryan ran just a tiny bit wide going into Chris's curve and ran onto the wet grass, now we all know that slicks and wet grass don't make for a great combination, and the bike decided to exit left!!
Being a sensible lad Ryan decided that now would be a good time to part company with the bike before it got to the barriers and promptly stepped off at around 100 mph:eek: Ryan escaped serious injury but was fairly battered and bruised.. the bike on the other hand was destroyed as it went end over end into the barrier.. Race 1 was just two hours away but even with only one lap done Ryan was 8th on the grid but as said the bike was in a sorry state.
Then the work began.. Take 6 top bike mechanics and a broken bike and magic happens, 1 hour 45 mins later Ryan and bike are race ready Ryan being heavily strapped up and the bike has been completely rebuilt with only the engine being salvaged from the wreckage.
Taking the sensible (painful) approach both rider and machine finished in a very creditable 8th place with a lap time that puts them 7th on the grid for todays first race.
You can catch the race live on eurosport .
Cheers
