Colin does Amature MMA for Cancer research UK - my forum blog
Yes I'm sure most people on this forum would be more likely to link my name with "Amature" and "Teen" but no, it's true, I'm currently about to begin training for the challenge of my life.
The fight being September 29th, 4 days after my 36th birthday, so there's not a lot of time, training will be three times a week via the Ultra MMA associates in Belfast. Ive begun doing a video blog with my goal being obviously to win the fight but above all to raise £2000 for Cancer research UK. Please £1 or £5 anything helps and your gonna get regular updates of me knocking my nuts in over next 8 weeks. Now if you know me, you know I'm NOT a fit person, not into healthy lifestyles and no into getting up at 6.30am to go for a run. So your gonna see me in pain, a LOT of pain as I struggle with this. Ive taken images here of myself as part of the process, taken a few days ago, why because I have always tried to hide my body. Years ago I was 22 stone and have since managed to get it down, in the new year I ballooned to 108kg again with a combination of emotional problems and being laid off. Thankfully the Couch to 5k process has helped me and I'm now 96.7kg as well as its helped me gain a level of fitness that I've not had in 20 years. At only 5 foot 9 also, I don't hide the weight well. Why am I doing this, I've lost family to Cancer, and I got the all clear from throat cancer (for now) in February and that's why I'm doing this, to help others with treatment and research to prevent it all. So now here's my video blog, this is the 3rd in the series with videos of my physical training starting later in the week, the others can be found on my you tube account also where everything will be uploaded. If you can spare anything please donate, I've set up a just giving page, if you want to offer me help or something that might help me out over the next 8 and half weeks I will take anything I can get. I will see no money from this, I'm buying my own kit also, paying for all my own training and so on, so follow the YouTube channel, that's where almost everything will be shared along with updates on my just giving page. Colin "Highlander" Robson Video 3 https://youtu.be/HW-XCWOGL08 Video 2 https://youtu.be/YFsMC9hC3eQ Video 1 (sorry I had just eaten some nuts before filming this one) https://youtu.be/JPeOkfj4tzY Donate to Cancer research here - https://www.justgiving.com/fundraisi...ingeorgerobson Updates will follow folks, and thanks in advance to all of the 75 zt club for their support. |
Happy to donate. Really want to come and watch the fight too. Where's it being held ??
I can get my sister to sort you out with a back and chest wax foc too - mma and body hair isn't a good combo. |
Flipping eck. Good luck to you, don't do things by halves, do you.
Assuming you haven't got a background in martial arts of any kind, this is a monster challenge, really wish you the best in your training. Happy to donate :} |
Lol no way. Staying hairy haha. But thank you very much.
Some where in Belfast, a hotel, they told us tonight but was so much info couldn't take it all in. Will announce closer to date. |
Net step, audition for Poldark! :D:}
|
I cant beleive in 24 hours my donation total has tripled already.
Thank you everyone so far. It means so much to me. |
Best of luck with it buddy. I'll not be able to come to the fight as I'm away that weekend, but I'll be there in spirit! I know a couple of guys who are into MMA including one who runs the gym I go to, so I'll ask them for any tips they have re training.
|
Decky Dalton is my cousin, I'd ask him for tips but he scares me :D
|
Wishing you all the best in the MMA Bout, I've done full contact kickboxing in the past and its very adrenaline based rush. :D
Loved it. :D And for Cancer research as well not many people are willing too enter a contact sport like that. You have my respect for doing that you got some balls I'll give you that. :D |

Well today I had a spare half hour and popped out to get bits I need. Sadly I couldn't find the hung like a black donkey willy protector so I had to settle with this one. Will just have to roll it up or something. I will be fighting in yellow and black, I picked that as A, they are my favourite colours and B, yellow is a eye grabbing and distracting colour, and C, psychological effects as it can make it a hard to read environment and cause feelings of frustration. Sounds foolish, but my own mind is my hardest battle. Now to finish dinner and go for a late night run in cold air to clear my head! |
Some more updates folks, total update, few crappy training videos, new way to donate and final confirmation that the fights will be held in Crown Plaza Hotel, Shawsbridge Belfast
View discretion advised. Some ugly fat guy in video. https://youtu.be/Ivnfh6zLilE http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...ps7odxvhhq.jpg Remember you can donate via www.justgiving.com/fundraising/colingeorgerobson or via text, text CRMM48 and £0.00 to 70070 with every penny going to Cancer Research UK. Thank you everyone for donating so much already!!!! Colin. |
Keep up the good work Colin - seems like you're really putting yourself through the mill!
I'm not sure how important strength-building is for your particular training needs (as opposed to e.g. cardio fitness etc), but if that's something you feel the need to work on then it might be worth discussing the Wendler programme with your trainer. In case you haven't heard of this, it's done with free weights (i.e. barbells) and focuses on four key lifts - bench press, back squat, deadlift and military press. Each day, you pick just one of those lifts to focus on as part of your overall training session - this LINK provides a pretty clear explanation. I've done it a fair few times and I've found it works really well for increasing both limb and core strength, e.g. going from a one-rep maximum deadlift of 130kg around mid-May to 155kg last week. It's usually done in four week stints, with the fourth week being a "deload" session, so you could actually fit in two rounds of it before your fight, especially if you train four or more days per week. NB I'm sure your trainer has told you this already, but don't forget to build in recovery time! You'll need to take a day or two per week where you're just not training. Keep 'er lit. |
Mentioned this to my gym coach today and he suggested working on a couple of moves, if you aren't already. First of all, good old bench press, so as to be able to push/lift your opponent off if you're trapped underneath him. Second one is the "Turkish get-up", where you lie on your back on the floor and keep one arm vertical at all times as you get up into a standing position, then go back down & repeat e.g. three or four times for each side.
Here's a short but very step-by-step video showing how to do it, although you probably won't want to start off with a kettle bell! https://youtu.be/2dx2rM1FSgE Get the technique right first, then as you progress with it you might start doing it with a dumbbell in the hand you're holding vertically. Again, this is about helping you to resist being held down. |
First night of training for the Ultra MMA on September 29th. Training is held at IFS Belfast MMA gym, and a great friendly bunch at that.
First off all, wow, thank you, I can't beleive the total so far is £465 already (with another £85 free thanks to gift aid) and some cash donations to collect later in week. Everyone's kindness has blown me away. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraisi...ingeorgerobson Tough would not be the word, I absolutely died on my ass, cardio destroyed me along with the various exercises. Long long way to go, I'd say I was easily the least fit there tonight, scared me so much I came home and did 3k night run before bed!! Gonna triple my efforts now. Thankfully these two mad men are gonna help me get there! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...psv16dbg56.jpg I will do more than my best folks, this is life and death to me. Also I will have tickets for sale as of next Thursday so let me know who wants some!! Colin. |
Well another update for you folks, big one at that. Its a 30 minute video all about what's been happening this week, and my god has it been a busy one and it's still 3 more days left.
I will have tickets from next Thursday ready for people but will do another update then. So you know what to do, follow the YouTube link below and don't forget to donate to my just giving page or sent a text to 70070 with CRMM48 in the info and £1.00 to £100.00 what ever you want to donate!!! https://youtu.be/cJaZsMshZ4A www.justgiving.com/fundraising/colingeorgerobson Was a good nights training. |
What an emotional day it has been. Proper full length video in the YouTube link below, updates, bad night training, injuries, pain and finding perseverance from it all afterwards.
Tonight was the hardest pain and embarrassment that exercise has ever put me through and I was genuinely distressed about it when I made this video. https://youtu.be/Amljg3FCazQ And finally after everything else. This happened at 5am today as I'm on night shift..... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...pslbvp4t8g.jpg Thank you everyone so very much. Folks I had such a bad day training, but seing this has really made me emotional and so grateful. I will do this and give my best. Send a text to 70070 with CRMM48 in the info and £1.00 to £100.00 what ever you want to donate!!! www.justgiving.com/fundraising/colingeorgerobson |
Quick video about tickets this week.
Anyone that wants tickets for the evening of fights on September 29th I need the cash now so I can buy them and get them to you. I would prefer payment of £20.00 per ticket via PayPal to [and I will post it out to you. Due to needing to sell 20 tickets minimum I need the cash or payment up front as I don't have that kinda money of £400.00 sitting about. Tickets will be limited so don't miss the chance to seemy get my butt kicked! https://youtu.be/EVjRntOIjLY #mma #ultramma #fighting #amature #beginner #gettingfit #colin #robson #cancerresearch #cancer #research #hippocharged |
As a twice cancer survivor, I would donate the hell out of this if I had the money, but I don't get paid 'till Wednesday. :( :( :(
|

More updates for those following. Havnt had a working phone with video for nearly three weeks after one broke and replacement was lost in post.
Big fight is next Saturday night and going to be an intense week ahead. This update covers my two wonderful trips I've had to hospital along with overall progress. Tickets purchased where posted today and those should be with you by Monday or Tuesday. Remember to donate via www.justgiving.com/fundraising/colingeorgerobson if you want to help me get up past the £700 mark. https://youtu.be/3hRyqyRZlFI |
Additionally I thought I'd share some photos of how I've changed.
Quick update on my training. In the last 6 weeks I've lost 3 inches off my stomach gut, my man boobs are gone and whilst not flat it's getting close to it. Biggest part has been the flexibility of my back that Ryan Allister has been helping me with. He's known me a long time, has known I've had major issues from it and as the back has improved my motion and ability has also. I credit him with motivating me with my food intake then balancing, always giving me advice when I'm struggling and also absolutely kicking my ass personal training wise. I've not embarrassed saying that at the start of all this he don't think I was going to be able to do it, frankly neither did I but we worked as as a team and it's been beast mode every time. The last session was no different and he stops me from going to far to point of injury when I'm wanting to go further beyond common sense and my abilities high on adrenaline and after my 5k run this morning lol. I've felt also strong increase in my running around the 5k to 6.5k mark now be it training with the Mallusk Harriers twice a week, or on my own 3 times a week minimum and also my cardiovascular in general helping me survive the ultra MMA training with the pro trainers at IFS Belfast 3 times a week being amazing to work with and learning so much. Obviously it all ties together and I've never felt better, maybe fittest in my life. And I'm still a unfit mess compared the beasts at the MMA group haha. Note images with beard are before and after are without beard. Today's weight 93.7kg. Officially out of xl clothing and down to large, I'm loose in size 38 jeans and OK in 36. I was 40 to 42 in April. I am very proud of what I've achieved so far and target for my birthday 10k on 25th September but sadly my own goal of 90kg for my fight on 29th September has been a bit of a stretch. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...psbr1m3zvc.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...ps8512y7jv.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...pserum5qhd.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...ps2zzh7h3t.jpg Before is with beard. After last 7 weeks or so is without. I finish work at 7.30 and will be straight down to him for my morning session and home, rest and onto evening session with dave who takes the mma classes. |
Absolutely busted today. Really been trying to step it up. So hours training with Ryan this morning, just under two hours technique training at IFS this evening with Dave, and now I'm home and just came back from a 6k run. I had hoped for more this evening but its getting to dark to run safely now.
Just under 4 hours of exercise, training and cardio today. And I'm wrecked. Now a nice omelette and protein shake, sit down in front of TV and chill before bed. Thanks again for all donations, just under £650 now and with a week to go I'd love to break £700. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/colingeorgerobson or you can text CRMM48 £5.00 to 70070 and that goes directly to my just giving page also. Thank you everyone, I'm really trying to do the best and not disappoint you with my commitment this Saturday. Colin |
Well my 10k run after my birthday didn't go as planned.
Got into my 3rd lap down at the valley and my ribs where beginning to aches badly. Got to the pond on my 3rd lap (about the 7k mark) and I just had to stop as pain was making want to pass out. Absolutely livid at myself as I wasn't out of breath or energy. So had to stop / start to finish the distance. Took me nearly an hour and 40 mins having to stop from pain and rest again. Well at least I tried and I know I'm close to it in one run in the future. Now to rest until Saturday before the big fight. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/colingeorgerobson Thank you as always for donations. Only £20 off £700 now. You have been amazing and supportive. Colin |
Yes it's not a pretty sight but I'm a dam sight lighter than a few months ago, and what a redneck tan ffs.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...psiwnts82a.jpg Fight night is Saturday night from 5pm, this is me 100% committed. Every penny goes to Cancer research and text donations appear there also. You can donate via text by sending CRMM48 £X.XX to 70070 or via my just giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/colingeorgerobson God help me I'm gonna walk around my local village tomorrow evening looking like this to try and collect even more money! There's another video on everything. So wish me luck folks. https://youtu.be/e3sgMonqR-g |
That's me folks. Going quiet until after my fight tomorrow evening. Phone will be off from 1pm.
For everyone attending please remember first fight is 5.30pm, I'd suggest being there from 4.30pm as they are gonna open the doors a bit early to get everyone sorted. Don't forget the dress code and your tickets!!!! I will be in the back until my fight is over. Get the time of my fight at 5pm so I will send you a message and let you all know. Bar that, best of luck to my opponent Jonny and see you all tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for supporting me. We broke £1000 tonight so thank everyone for the donation. Colin |
Best of luck tonight mate. It's not theatre so I won't say to break a leg, in case that actually happens ... Well done on the fundraising and on sticking with the training. Don't forget to enjoy the experience!

That's me only just home. Hell of a long night ended up being the last fight so I'm sorry everyone who had to stand the whole night.
Me and Jonathan Harper had a great fight to a draw and to be honest I think it was fair, but another 10 seconds in the arm lock he would have had me in the 3rd round had the bell not went. Great time, great people, fitness has been great and over £1100 raised thanks to everyone's donations. And it would pass £1200 by Monday. This made me the person who raised the most and I got a trophy from cancer research UK for it which nearly brought me to tears. Thanks to Alastair Houldsworth for the photos to prove I did it haha. Now onto the next challenge. Belfast half marathon September 2019. Thank you Dave Hill Phil Campbell Oktawian Daniel Olejniczak for putting me through my paces at IFS 3 times a week and more. Thank you to Ryan Allister for working with me and my back for last 10 weeks to help me survive as there's not a mission I'd of done this with him working through my back issue and cracked ribs. Lol. Finally thanks to all my loved ones who have had to out up with my NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- for the last 8 weeks or so over this =( |

Talking rubbish before the match with few of the guys and a more serious note towards the end. |

Thought I'd do a quick overview of the fight on Saturday night and what it was all like. £1250 raised plus about another £191 in gift aid. Total of £1441 and I've still to collect the donation boxes from local village. Hoping that nudges it up to £1500 all in. Folks that has just been wonderful I also became top fund raiser becuase of it and was presented with this below. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...psjlnwc1hq.jpg Nearly brought me to tears as it meant so much. |
Well done mate, hats off to you. Glad you survived it relatively unscathed. You're a nutter, like,;) but it took real commitment to go for it and stick at it.
