Electric seat fuse keeps blowing
Hello guys, I got a 75 LHD European, the one fuse that's responsible for both the passenger side electric seat and seat heating (can't remember the number) keeps blowing each time I change it, doesn't happen instantly when I replace the fuse and while switching the heated seat on or moving the seat, it's just like one day it works and the next day it's randomly blown without any obvious reason. Does it probably have to do with the fact that the carpet was drowned in water for some days because of a leaking seal some months ago? Btw now everything is 100% dry as the leak was fixed and everything was thorougly dried out. Any ideas? Thank you!

So how would you suggest to proceed with the "investigation"? Remove the seat, and then what would you look for?

Hello Galambosi,
Don't remove the seat at his early stage. On the wiring diagram a relay is shown for the passenger seat adjustment. I think that you're going to find that under the seat. I'd suggest removing it to disable seat movement. Next continue to use the seat heater and see if the fuse still blows. The idea is to try to isolate the fault to one or the other. Simon

I see, makes sense! Do you know approximately how that relay looks like? Or maybe the color or other details that could help me identify if? Anyway I'll eventually get to it and see what it's all about. I also suspect the actual seat heating element, probably old or way past it's prime time, but didn't hear of them causing so much electrical discharge that it would make a fuse blow. But then my reasoning: as it's almost older than me lol and doesn't resist electrical current as good as it once did, maybe it lets too much through (and not resisting it as it should to articulate it in a more traditionally fashioned way), and because of that (maybe) the fuse keeps blowing, but then I cannot understand why it doesn't blow meanwhile I move the seat or when the heating element is on... but rather randomly after when those are not being operated

Update: today went in and replaced the fuse, blew right away when turned the key ignition on, 3 times replaced and happened like that all the times. Then I located the relay, it's a yellow one, unplugged it, replaced the fuse again with the relay unplugged, and it got knocked out regardless... I'm left clueless now. Do you think that since I unplugged the relay, is it more possible than not that the electric seat is not a problem but something else?
This is the relay I unplugged: Last edited by Rsnail; 27th January 2024 at 14:05.. |
