Default buying a petrol one

good morning everyone...

so i was thinking about buiyng a zr with a petrol engine...

they are really cheap here in Portugal and kms that it will make in a year dont justifie a diesel...

but my really issue is the head gasket, here in Portugal everyone that has this engine wants to sell because its famous for burnng the head gasket...

most of people here have a bad opinion about mg rover because of that...

my question...

why does it happen???
what can i do to avoid problems in the head gasket???

the engine i will probably choose the 1.4 petrol, the 1.8 dont seems the best option because its for my wife use and she wont the power of that 1.8 engine...

thank you all.

All you need to know about the Rover 75/MG ZT is here in the buying guide there are scaremongers everywhere about K4 engine, a good many by now have been well and truly sorted and HGF is not the problem is was (after all majority are now 10/12 years old) the 1.8 is the smallest engine in the range, a 1.4/1.6 even if available would not be able to cope with the vehicle weight, conversion to a smaller engine is fraught with problems of engine management and best left alone.

thanks for your opinions, however here in Portugal lots of them had blown the head gasket, and what concerns me is that many of that cars had for exemple coolant in the right level....

so what is the real issue???

for exemple i can buy a 1.4 here in Portugal for 2.000 euros, its a bargain over here for all that amount a car, i am talking about a zr...

i think the best engine is the 1.4 because of daily use and small tripes it will make, basically home to wife work...

doesn t reach 10.000 kms per year...

there in england do you guys have the same issue with the headgasket???
