Injector issues? Fuel? ECU?
Hi all! My diesel auto has been running rough since I brought it a few months back, lots of work later I'm finally getting around the diagnosing the issue! Millage is around 197,000
Symptoms: Rough idle Significant vibration in park (disappears with a slight rise in revs) Loss of power (especially when climbing hills) Generally feeling sluggish when pulling away etc Things tried! Fuel pumps checked, both working but under bonnet noisy New intercooler o rings New air filter New PCV Injector cleaner x 4 Taken on long run, dropping down to 4th/3rd Full service inc auto fluid Full set of engine mounts Unplugged MAF (very slight improvement to performance but rough idle and vibration remain) Leak back test - engine running for 2mins - results here! https://drive.google.com/file/d/141A...ew?usp=sharing I'm leaning towards it perhaps being an injector? It looks like number 4 has been replaced in the past looking at the markings on the top. Really appreciate your thoughts! Last edited by strand1988; 30th April 2023 at 14:26.. |

The reading of the leak back test after two minutes is fine has they are all 15mm whereas 20mm is the recommendation after that time. 1 Has the manifold EGR and MAP sensor been cleaned, what is the rev counter saying on tick over. Another thing you can check is the vacuum hoses coming from the EGR solenoid. 2 3 4 5

Hey Steve, thanks so much for these pointers. The EGR is clean, looks like it might have been replaced, almost looks too clean for the miles! The breather hoses also look in good condition. Silly question and something I should really know after all these years but where is the MAP located?
I've just taken a little video of the idle, moving from P to D (36secs in) etc this is without the MAF connected, it is worse with! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vs-...ew?usp=sharing Thanks so much! Rob Last edited by strand1988; 30th April 2023 at 14:16.. |

It could be worth adding some injector cleaner too. My own idle smoothed out when I first used it. I do change filter every time, and use Forte injector cleaner every filter change, and dont normally notice much difference anymore (normally 6-8k miles - which is overkill to be honest). Fill the new filter with neat injector cleaner, let it idle for a minute or so, then switch off and leave to soak overnight. The next day, take it for a run, put it into sport mode and take it for a run, with an Italian tune up.

Great points! It had a new fuel filter with the service about 500 miles ago, when I collected the car is was badly leaking diesel from a very poorly fitted filter so its been a lot of work undoing the previous owners 'fixes'... thought I was getting somewhere but this running issue is fast becoming a problem especially in traffic, the car barely idles if I leave it in drive.

The idle does not seem to bad but you can hear it's as though it might cut out, a local member also Rob had this same trouble with his FL1 it was a poor crank sensor once changed it would idle ok and didn't feel like it was going to cut out. MAP sensor is on the side of the manifold. 1 Very hard to remove with the manifold in place 2 3 One on the left would be clogged due to the manifold being gunked up with black residue, ir maybe that the previous owner only changed the EGR or cleaned just the EGR and not the manifold, and removed the MAP to wipe it clean. So manifold may look like this inside. 4 As opposed to this. 5

Ah! I've just got hold of a used inlet manifold so I will give it a good pressure wash and swap them over once it arrives along with a new MAP. In the mean time ill try a crank sensor or 'borrow' the one from my dads 75!
Thank you so much for all your advice! |

Progress update!
After feeling defeated this morning, I decided to try unplugging the MAP sensor. As I was unplugged it I noticed another cable laying at the side with what looked like a temp probe on it.... turns out it was a glow plug! So I'm thinking that could cause poor running if there is essentially a hole in the cylinder?! Fingers crossed I can get the rest of it out! Intake manifold is now off and will be cleaned etc! So it can only one of the two pointed out in the photo below, make sure you use a long deep socket which is six sided to try and remove the damaged glow plug, that is if the nut is still intact, always better if the engine is hot when trying to remove the glow plugs. Another tip is let them soak in plus gas if you can before hand as well. 1 2 3 4 5
