Default End of the road I think

So the clutch pedal has been getting more and more “floppy” for a while, and it looks to be the master cylinder. I ordered one from DMGRS, but the bonnet cable broke when my local Rover specialist tried to open it.

He was fitting me in between other jobs, so hasn’t got time to work on getting the bonnet open, and is booked up for the next couple of months.

Can’t get anybody else round here to do the job either, so it looks like curtains – I’ve just had enough.

Will report back when I get the car home, but I don’t see any way of avoiding the scrapyard.

Unfortunate Roger, but you can't give up after all your trials.

Lots of YouTube tutorials on opening the bonnet, here's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVHRH1vaeJI - method of attack might depend on where the cable has broken.

There was even a guy on here who managed to remove the pins using a wonky spanner.

Replacing the master is fiddly but not that difficult, especially compared to the slave. Can't remember exactly but I guess it took me about 45/60 mins, which is after all less time than it takes the average Windows PC to load

Good luck

Mike

Yes, you can do that or mayby someone from the forum who lives close could give you a helping hand. The problems mentioned should not be the reasons to sent it to the scrapyard. Do not give up, better weather and possibilities are upcoming.

If you did not live in such an out of the way place
I'm sure you would get offers of help. I'd even offer to change the master for you. I'd know I'd curse doing it, cant bend like I use to. I'm sure taking the drivers seat out makes it easier.
A tip for anyone changing a master, I found putting longer bolts in to hold the master in place made it easier. You do need to securely secure a nut and washer part way down the bolt, to act as the bolt head and clamp the cylinder in place.

Dont let the bonnet and master be the end, it is not that serious.... a slave is in my opinion a big job and not for the faint hearted

No offence to your local Rover specialist but l would have thought he'd be able to open the bonnet pretty quickly. At least then he could get the booked work done.

Thanks for the kind words guys, but it was just the last straw. She's been fun, but a money pit for too long - mind's made up.

Oh, he knows what he's doing, but apparently the break is in a particularly awkward place, and would take a long time, which he hasn't got for the foreseeable.

I think it was Arctic who recently posted a pic of a tool he came up with to open the bonnet easily. It may be worth looking up.

Thanks for the kind suggestions everybody, but I took a deposit yesterday - she's going on Thursday.

To cancel any lingering doubts, after my advertising her as rust-free, the guy got down with a torch and showed me some on the sills, so they're starting to go as well - bit embarrassing, and a price-dropper of course.

The good news is that the guy already has a 75, and wants to restore mine to glory - otherwise she might well have been scrapped.
