Angry Help! Alternator dead again

My Alternator recently failed and after removing the brushes in situ realised that this was the problem, after fitting a new regulator and brush pack for my later 2 pin type all was well as the battery light was now out and the unit was charging.

Now after 135 miles with everything seeming OK, when going to work this morning , half way through my journey the battery light started flickering and then came on intermittently but settled down to a faint flicker eventually, all my electrics started becoming weak with ABS light on as well as Airbag light.

It certainly looks as if I am going to be recovered home again this evening. As you can imagine after the backbreaking In situ brush change I have broken down again!

I was told that when fitting the new brush pack to check that there was not any white plastic residue on the shaft contact surfaces which would mean that the slip ring has failed, I wiped the shaft with a clean cloth and there did not seem to be any residue.
But after doing the brush replacement I am suspicious that all something else is wrong as the unit is making as sort of low pitched clicking rattly sound.

Can any body give any clues please!

It may be that the alternator is worn out ( possible bearing if clicking internally ) and ready to finally die.

Don't discount a naff battery as well, multiple electronic faults usually run in tandem with a dying battery tis the season for battery failures.

Have a look in the contents of my signature for all things charging related diesel

Hi Snagger.

I did an in situ brush change last week as per the post I put on then, I have the later 2pin Alternator and fitted the brush and regulator unit supplied from DMGRS. After the backbreaking In situ change my Battery light went out and all was well for the next 135 miles until this morning when I got the symptoms described.

I have now looked at a u-tube be video and noticed that it is possible that I have a poor contact on one of the brush slip rings, I did clean the rings up with a rag and some meths but looking at the video and the picture I took it looks as if there is quite a bit of Black residue on one of the brush slip rings.

I am going to try to post an image that I took.

Hi Keith,

Have replied to your pm.

Here is a link to an alternator supplier some members on here have used them and say they are ok.

http://startandcharge.co.uk/alt840-alternator.html

These are the higher output 120 w version as well, check with them before purchase, and make sure the label on your alternator, matches that on the list, on the left hand side under Rover, on their website.

Yes - that outer ring is well worn. I would have the unit tested/rebuilt by an auto electrician specialising in such work. There are quite a few around who will complete such work at reasonable cost.
