Went on a longer spin this evening circa 25 miles, followed by a couple of hours in the cinema then another 25 miles home.

Mix of town (though not a lot of traffic) and a-road driving.

Didn’t get above 82, and tended to sit around 79/80 most of the journey.

I think you have thermostat trouble. Your engine is running too cool.

How difficult are they to swap out?

Also, I’ve checked coolant and oil this morning. No loss of coolant despite the 50 mile round trip, and no sign of mayo on the oil cap.

Your 1.8T has probably got a PRT (Pressure Relief Thermostat). Look behind the radiator for a plastic assembly with three coolant connections.

Thanks both, will try and get under the car and have a look for it tomorrow. Then get the part ordered and change it.

Going to order one of these and the ILM gasket for when I have the chance to do the jobs.

The listing mentions that it’s an 82 degree thermo, is that the temperature it kicks in at? As that’s how high my temp was getting.

The rating of a thermostat, in this case 82˚, is the temperature at which it begins to open. The operation is slow and steady typically taking many degrees before it's fully open. I don't have any data for the 1.8T but the standard 1.8 was factory fitted with an 88˚ thermostat which is ideal for the UK climate.

If you Google the original part number given by DMGRS (PEM 100990) you'll see that there's a lot of choice. For example, This Land Rover parts supplier states clearly that an 88˚ PRT is available. I would go for that one if I were you (if the ports are the same diameter).

You've said Tom that your engine reaches a maximum of 82˚. That's consistent with a thermostat that is either stuck open or is opening much earlier than 82˚, hence my suspicion that your PRT is faulty.

Club member T-Cut has investigated the various PRTs (originally identified by the colour of the casing) in a detailed, scientific manner. You may like to look at his posts before making a decision.
