Does it sound anything like this:

Noise starts around 19 seconds in, and quickly fades as the engine warms.

Absolutely Sean, thanks for your very sensible post.

There's no point in speculation, let's see what the garage finds starting with the manifold chamber linkage and ancillary belt as previously stated.

It's difficult to compare really, the noise in your video is quite similar albeit less metallic but the main differences are the apparent location of the noise, yours seems to be from the top left (standing at the front of the car) and the fact that it disappears when the engine warms up and quite quickly too, its also not as loud and mine was evident from inside the car whilst driving and with all the windows and A/C switched on. Mine didn't do this and rattling was evident from initial start up to after the engine was at operating temperature.
Outside with the bonnet up and engine running it was the loudest noise i've heard this car make in 23 years of ownership and that includes the rattling that was present when I got the car, eventually rectified when the belts and ancillaries were last changed.

For those that have had definite inlet manifold issues, did the problem begin suddenly overnight- as mine has or was it a more transient deterioration?

I know the manifold problem won't kill the engine but a faulty tensioner or idler or waterpump will and whilst it's being inspected for this it just seems sensible to change the belts etc.

Thanks Cliff for taking the time to post the video, very useful .

No worries Sean. Mine was piston slap, but from your description I think you can safely discount that from the probable causes. Hopefully one less thing to consider.

I don't know the Rover petrol engines and am not sure if I missed detail but I use these for tracing which tappet may be sticking or belt noises:-

Update on the rattling: just spoken to garage and he’s found that the hydraulic tensioner plunger was faulty , he’s amazed the belts hadn’t jumped, thankfully that didn’t happen.
I’ve just ordered a belt kit with the plunger from DGMRS so that should be with the garage next week and hopefully soon after the car back with me.
Thanks

Thanks for the update Sean.

It's vitally important that you give your garage the setting-up instructions for the tensioner pulley which is in the DMGRS kit and is supplied with a loose adjuster. These instructions are written by INA, the original supplier of the pulley to Rover, and they are not available in RAVE or Haynes.

If the new pulley is installed without following the INA instructions, the cambelt's tension will be at risk.

If you can hold on for a day or two I can give you a link to the INA document.

Thanks Simon, the job won’t be started until next week , the chap that’s doing the work is an ex MGR technician and knows the set up procedure, he even described it to me as we were discussing which parts to order. If you could send the link though I am sure he won’t mind taking a look.

Often overlooked, but be cautious not to , is each cam pulley has a stretch bolt . They are not to be reused and have been known to sheer off in use when reused.
There are six required. 27nm and 90' of angle torque each
