As for the VAT registered issue, I had a problem with a faulty clutch slave cylinder that I had to replace after 500 miles and the company wouldn't refund because it wasn't fitted by such.
Don't be too hard on yourself Bernard as it is a lesson learned. A few years ago, I had work done by a Rover specialist garage just before the MOT. An X-part supplier and paid for the privilege. They broke the radiator fitting the gold resistor (which they replaced) and the car failed its MOT as a result of a botched weld they carried out for a rusted Jack point. The MOT tester was able to push a coat hanger wire through the weld.
I was the devil incarnate because I dared complain about the garage and what they did. I had gone to them, as people from this forum had recommended them highly. Since then all the work on the V6 is carried out by the forum mechanics and gurus.

Later on today, I am picking up the car from Shiner

If I'd welded that I would never dare to say I had. That looks so bad. Here's an example of my welding.

Oh that is a lovely smooth finish. Do you still weld? I did ask round at the time and I also asked on the enthusiasts forum, but no one could help me. It highlighted a need. Clearly your skills are special in my opinion. The guy who did the weld on the V6, was so proud of his work saying that it was the first time he had welded a Rover 75. I was furious and wanted to punch his lights out, the ****.
