The reality is how long is a piece of string, you could get off with not changing them for years or it could go bang next week. Your car so your choice really

In my case I looked at the number of cams being run off the belt and took into account the load that creates, then changed the belts as I can't afford to put it right if the V6 goes kablooie.

I suspect the Op hasn't really purchased a new V6. This is just a cunning plan to entice Brian back.

The fact that you are not in a position to do it now, makes all comments irrelevant. Any discussion is only going to fuel paranoia for you, even if you get the 'it will be fine, mine lasted 60,000,000 miles and was refitted when I replaced the head gaskets......................' or 'my neighbour's granny's cousin's car's belt snapped bang on 90,000 miles'.

Replacing it as soon as it's viable for you, to give you peace of mind is, I believe will be the best answer for you, whether there have been 10,000 failures or 10. You cannot do it now, so why worry about something you cannot control?

Yes, not me personally but my boss's 2.5 connie snapped its belt and destroyed the engine. BIG BUT though was he was an idiot and didn't get them changed and they gave out at 160k. He had owned the car from new, loved it but decided that paying out for a belt change wasn't justified based on the cars value. Replaced it with a 2.0 connie and after 2 years and basic servicing that blew a head gasket so he paid out £500 for a 1.8 turbo. No idea how that survived as I left and lost touch.

Very clever man who loved his 75's and has owned them from first coming out and would not buy anything else, but once the value collapsed to him they were not worth spending on.

As all have said your call, when you can afford it consideration of the age of the belt as well as mileage is relevant, not much gets better by being older! except??? answers in a plain envelope. Chris.S.

Do you love your V6 or do you love a V6? If you love yours and the change is due, then change them. If the belt/s go, you can pick up another car for the same money as getting the belts done!!! (Worm tin is now fully opened and the top is off! )

I've been rebuilding a 2.5 V6 over the last few months where the belt had jumped a few teeth when the plastic outer of the idler pulley had cracked and broken up. Unfortunately for the previous owner, the belt had been changed, but none of the associated bits (tensioner, plunger, idler, water pump).

Considering the complexity of the job on a V6, it's false economy not to change ALL associated components whilst in there to change the belts.

The cost and time required to replace a full set of inlet valves is pretty big...

Sorry - should have mentioned that the belts were aledgedly changed around 90k, the broken tensioner made it to just over 115k.

Hi, I had a cam belt snap years ago on a citroen gs, it had I think two belts. It was when kids were young and we did everything on a shoe string. I eventually found a good engine for £30 and that lasted the cars life. I personally would do the belts before anything else.

My V6 2.5 is 16 years old. The belts have been changed twice, with all associated bits. Now has a metal thermostat from Kaiser.
Still done less than 35000 miles.
I have owned the car for 14 years, with 8000 on the clock when I bought it.
Maybe I'm crazy but I don't think so.
