Rear suspension 75 Tourer

Can anyone tell me why the rear lower arms have a forward plastic trim?

I'm pretty certain it's there as a wind deflector, to stop any chance of wind whistle from the shape of the arm.

The Technical Brochure (1998) says that:

"A plastic protector is fitted to prevent stonechip damage ...

That doesn't sound very convincing to me. If a stone is at risk of damaging steel then a piece of plastic stands no chance!

My guess is that it is more to do with the 'grit blasting' effect of debri off the road eg salt as you drive along

I reckon the prime reason is to prevent the channel sections filling with so much dirt they would end up being box section

I've been asked about this a few times - in all honesty I think it's just a bit of protection from stone chips etc as the arm hangs quite low.
As mentioned by another poster, it'll also stop the arm void filling with mud - damp mud rots things incredibly quickly (especially if it contains salt)

Thanks to all who replied. I thought wind noise at first but not noisy at the mo.Stone /debris protection is a possible but my lower arms were still filled with mud and rubbish. Both upper and lower arms were rotten leading to the collapse of the right upper arm. All arms have been replaced along with springs and new fixings. Sub frame was removed and cleaned up/painted before refitting. I tested the repairs on a short drive only to find the left side to be hammering down hard on small bumps, looks like I need new shockers as well. All the work was done at home by son and myself so a parts only repair!

Rear seat cup holders. Wanted: Walnut auto gear stick handle Mods to do: all done , need to come up with some more.
