What did the key guy do then? Presumably he removed the EWS to read it and to write a new chip to it and then just fitted the new chip into your existing key fob. Or did he provide you with a new key and fob leaving you with one new working key and one old non working key without a chip.
Regardless of what you wish to do now if you do nothing else then get a digital pic of the blade of the key that you currently have and keep at least 2 separate copies of it. In a way you have been lucky in just losing your one and only chip because losing a one and only key blade puts you in different world of pain which ultimately only BMW in Germany can resolve - unless you go down the fraught route of swapping in bits from other cars. You can pre-empt that happening by keeping a digital pic of a key blade which can be used as a pattern from which some key cutters can cut a replacement.
