It sounds like the fire rings have been breached and there is exhaust gas in the coolant to me

Agreed, but I was breaking it to him slowly.

Unfortunately the nettle needs to be grasped at some point I suppose TC

I would suggest the best cause of action to eliminate or confirm the head gasket has failed is to have a "sniff" test or a telltale dye added to the coolant.

As an aside, with the IPK in diagnostic mode you can time from stone cold the period between start up and the engine reaching 88 degrees at idle.

If less than between eight and ten minutes, then this suggests the coolant is being superheated with escaping compression gasses.

The OP may also like to see if the low speed fan is operational

Guess so, but HGF and less than a dozen posts is a real baptism of fire! Hope the OP isn't scared off!

The symptoms are suggesting that the head gasket has failed.
It looks like the pressurisation of the cooling system is due to exhaust gas being pumped in.
There are tests you can do to home in on the diagnosis.
1. Residual cold pressurisation
With engine stone cold, open header tank cap and check/adjust coolant to the MAX level.
replace cap firmly and drive car normally for at least ten miles at speeds up to 70mph.
Park the car and leave it untouched overnight.
Next morning unscrew the pressure cap and listen for any release of pressure.
If there's a distinct hiss, then the head gasket has failed.
A lack of pressure doesn't mean anything significant but is preferable.

2. Have the coolant tested for exhaust gas. This is sometimes refered to as a sniff test but any garage should have the gear to do it. Alternatively there are test kits on Bay.

Good luck.

Do you have any recommendations for head gasket mechanics, I am just outside Ashby De La Zouch.
Thanks for all your help.

Other forum members give good reports to Austin Garages who are somewhere in the Derby/Burton area.
