Default Diesel water pump

I have had an irritating coolant loss which I've kept on top of by topping up. I suspected it was the O ring that seals the small pipe on the top of the thermostat housing, my suspicion was confirmed this morning when I parked at the railway station. I bought the O ring many weeks ago and have been waiting for warmer weather before sliding under the beast to change it. I've had her since new and currently have 138k on the "clock" so I'm going to change the belt [it'll be the second time] cos I know it makes sense and I'm umming and arring about doing the pump as well [as a precaution] so the question is..... has anyone done one and what is the BMW equivalent, any points I should watch for?
